CCNOA is pleased to announce the solo exhibitions of Marthe Wéry (B) and Ludo Engels (B). While Wéry will present a selection of wall and floor works in the main galleries, Engels will conceive a light installation for the project room. Continuing our series of exhibition essays, Alice Evermore on CCNOA, a new text by Evermore will accompany these exhibitions.

Simultaneously the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Paleis voor Schone Kunsten,
Brussels will organize an extensive exhibition of Marthe Wéry's oeuvre:
29 June - 16 September 2001.
Marthe Wéry
For more than three decades the discovery of "the
essential through the minimal", the pleasure of painting, the
ever-renewed experience of brush stroke, materials and color, have been
central to Wéry's practice:
"In her oeuvre, color is an essential element in shaping the surrounding
world into a decipherable form that penetrates the space in the sense of
an intentional 'positioning' of building blocks which generate an
inherent and inseparable physical relationship with the viewer." (Luk
Lambrecht)
Her constantly evolving work, ranging from the geometric
compositions of the '60s through the lined and monochrome works to the
smooth light-absorbing multipartite installations and her current
research into surface, has become one extensive and careful search for
subtle balance between architecture, space, art and color. Wéry's
exhibitions at the Palais des Beaux-Arts > Paleis voor Schone Kunsten
and at CCNOA evidence not only the candor and amplitude of her oeuvre
but also the artist's inspiring independence from the vogues and
vanities of the 'art world'.
Ludo Engels
Since the early ‘80’s Engels has worked as an improvising
musician, developing skills that he later onto applied to his artistic
practice, which includes music, audio-visual installations and
photography.
‘Ludo Engels wants to attain the essence of things. He
projects on a translucent screen. When I enter the room I see a,
diagonally floating, and out of focus, unrecognizable, pastel-like
image, slowly evolving into the next unclear shape. I know that these
are photographic images and that something must have been a model for
these slides, but now there are only vague organic forms left.’ (Zjuul
Devens)
The exhibitions are made possible with the generous support of the
artists, the CCNOAFriends & Members, and the Vlaamse
Gemeenschapscommisie van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest.
