International Fair
Curated by: Stephan Berg
New benchmarks for the art market will be set by an art fair which is to be held for
the first time this year: the dc duesseldorf contemporary. As curated fair and
international market place, it will focus on art from 1980 to the present. In a compact exhibition, the dc will present its compelling concept which relies on galleries with distinct artist programs, and pursues a lively and persuasive course.
Prof. Dr. Stephan Berg, Director of the Kunstverein Hannover // dc duesseldorf contemporary
curator: "What appealed to us, the four members of the dc duesseldorf contemporary's board
of curators, about this new fair was the opportunity to develop an international event which
would be subject to the selection of curators, yet functions as market. For us it was primarily
about choosing a wide range of international galleries which have their own programs and take
direction from the next generation. Ultimately, all the galleries which have been put on the list of exhibitors received a clear majority from us. As a result of this procedure, I believe the dc
duesseldorf contemporary has what it takes to become one of the most important fair projects
on the art market with both a future and appeal."
Exhibitors: 74 international galleries are to present a selection of the latest persuasive positions of the more than 400 artists in their programs. In addition to the usual fair booths, exclusive installations and one-man shows will enhance the exhibition area. During the dc a total of eight "artist-run" spaces will disclose their programs in a specially curated show by Sitegalerie (Petra Rinck, Ralf Brög).
Ulrich Voges, Galerie Voges + Partner, Frankfurt/Main: "As essential art location in Germany, the
Rhineland was in urgent need of revitalization. The dc has come at exactly the right moment. By
involving important and internationally-active curators, it is taking the right step towards putting artistic contents back in the limelight."
The average booth size is more than 50 m2; the maximum, 100 m2. In terms of spaciousness and
scale, the dc is sure to hold its own against other renowned exhibition locations. The open,
innovative booth system created by Karsten Weber, rheinfluegel (www.karsten-weberrheinflügel.
de) enables interesting spatial references and optimizes presentations. The booths,
which are all of equal quality and scale, are arranged democratically throughout the hall. The
"Square" - an exquisitely designed entry and lounge area – offers visitors a place to take a break, debate and reflect, or make new contacts. Behind 5-meter-high exhibition walls, each gallery has direct access from its booth to its own office port (which adds an extra 10 m2). The clear layout of the premises offers exhibitors a maximum of functional booth design options and
ensures that art is the focus of attention.
A panel discussion entitled Made in Germany will be held in the fair lounge at 6 p.m. on
Thursday, April 19. A curator, an artist, a gallery owner and a politician (active in the field of
cultural policies) will examine Germany as a market, production and exhibition location. The
event is being organized in cooperation with a large exhibition of the same name which will
present a broad overview of topical positions of contemporary art in Germany from May 25 to
August 26 at the Kestnergesellschaft, the Kunstverein and the Sprengel Museum in Hanover.
The dc will be accompanied by an exclusive program of supporting events, exciting exhibitions
and openings that will turn the city of Düsseldorf into one spectacular art event.
Together with the museum kunst palast, the Collection Haubrok, the NRW Forum, K21/K20, the Langen
Foundation and galleries in Düsseldorf, the dc is putting together a VIP program. By doing so it will create an intensive network between collectors, curators, museums, galleries and artists who will all contribute to underscoring the potential of the dc duesseldorf contemporary as a trading
center and contact forum.
Barbara Thumm, Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin: "With its interesting team of curators, the dc
duesseldorf contemporary is pursuing a promising concept. I value the fact that the fair is
conceived to be relatively compact and have not too many participants as this will enable a
more undiluted look at contemporary international art. What is more, the city of Düsseldorf has
evolved an international reputation as an artscape and offers the dc diversified surroundings."
