National Graduate Show

PICA’s HATCHED National Graduate Show is the most prestigious and comprehensive survey of new emerging artists in Australia today. The HATCHED 07 exhibition will present the work of the country’s finest graduates from 21 tertiary art schools. This annual exhibition provides a unique opportunity for recent graduates from the nation’s leading art schools to exhibit their work alongside their peers from each Australian state and territory.

Since its inception in 1992, HATCHED has showcased the work of more than 873 artists from 33 art schools across the country. The exhibition has been a springboard for the professional careers of many contemporary Australian artists, including Shaun Gladwell (1997) who represented Australia in the 2005 Yokahama Triennale; Monika Tichacek (2000) who won the prestigious Helen Lempriere Travelling Arts Scholarship in 2001; Sean Cordeiro (2002) who was a recent recipient of the Anne and Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship; and Nicholas Folland (1999) who was included in the highly influential 2004: Australian Culture Now exhibition at National Gallery of Victoria: Australia, Melbourne.

Whilst the Hatched exhibition provides an important opportunity for graduating artists to be shown in a major gallery and alongside their peers throughout Australia, associated programs such as the Symposium Series and Schools Program form a vital supporting role, encouraging the exploration and discussion of new ideas and the establishment of a national network. The aims of the Hatched programs are to introduce contemporary art and ideas to as many young people as possible and to nurture and encourage the future generation of contemporary artists.
