More Than Meets the Eye, the first Deutsche Bank exhibition consisting solely of photographs from the bank's collection, will be touring seven Latin American countries for two years starting this January. The exhibition comprises approximately 200 works by 54 German artists who have crucially determined the course of photographic art since 1945, and whose oeuvre is thus of central importance to contemporary art. Besides works by such familiar names as Gerhard Richter and Katharina Sieverding, the exhibition includes pictures by younger photographers such as Susa Templin and Delia Keller, as well as rare photographic works by artists such as Jochen Gerz and Sigmar Polke. After its debut in the Mexican city of Monterrey in January 2006, More Than Meets the Eye travels to Mexico City, Bogotà, Lima, Santiago, São Paulo and Buenos Aires. The last Deutsche Bank exhibition of works from the bank's collection – the extremely successful The Return of the Giants – toured Latin America in 2003/2004.
This first group exhibition dedicated to photography from the 50,000 art works of the Deutsche Bank Collection focuses on two genres that are especially characteristic of German photography: the photographic series and the large format photograph. From the works of Karl Bloßfeldt, August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher to Thomas Ruff's portraits and Thomas Struth's urban sequences, German photographers in particular have been assiduous collectors and categorizers of motifs, drawing attention to the extraordinary by sequencing the analogous. But a series can serve other purposes: it can record processes, reveal the dynamism of time, and tell stories; indeed, the exhibition contains many variations on these themes. Such sequences of images are juxtaposed by the large format photographs of artists such as Andreas Gursky and Wolfgang Tillmans. Here too photography shows more than would otherwise meet the eye. Wide-angle perspectives and digital manipulation reveal hitherto unseen perspectives in fascinating depth of focus that captures every little detail.
Besides focusing on the series and the large format photograph, the exhibition also demonstrates the rich variety of uses to which contemporary artists have put their cameras, using them as instruments for objective documentation, subjective impressions, and imaginative experiments. The photographic images in this exhibition vary from classic black-and-white prints to stitched collages to enormous panoramas. More Than Meets the Eye presents photography as both a fascinating medium that has found its place alongside the traditional arts and a mirror of German life and culture today.
A selection of works on paper from the Deutsche Bank Collection, including some by Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter, was first shown in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Chile in 1991, under the title Arte Alemán Contemporáneo. In 2003/2004 there followed a larger exhibition of "vehement painting" entitled El Regreso de los Gigantes – Pintura alemana 1975–1985 de la Colección Deutsche Bank, which was presented in museums in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The huge success enjoyed by this travelling exhibition among both critics and the general public prompted the Deutsche Bank to start work immediately on a sequel. This time the exhibits have been selected entirely from the bank's photographic treasures, which constitute a major portion of its collection. Besides being shown in institutions that are already established partners of Deutsche Bank Art, this exhibition will be the first to visit museums in Peru and Colombia.
