comunicato stampa

Francis Alÿs (Belgium)/Rafael Ortega (Mexico), Pierre Huyghe (France), Beat Streuli (Switzerland) and Gillian Wearing (UK) take the city of Birmingham as their subject in this exhibition. Video, installation and photography capture the artists` various responses to this fascinating city, which is constantly re-inventing itself.

Francis Alÿs has collaborated with Mexican film-maker Rafael Ortega to make a video work inspired by the city, while Pierre Huyghe`s video installation is based on his Concrete Requiem, a 10-part orchestral composition of sounds of the city. Beat Streuli`s trademark photographs of city-dwellers focus on Birmingham`s youth community and Gillian Wearing`s video captures Birmingham`s nightlife on Broad Street.

This exhibition is supported by www.icBirmingham.co.uk. Beat Streuli is assisted by Pro Helvetia, Presence Switzerland and The Embassy of Switzerland; Pierre Huyghe is supported by The French Embassy - Institut Français du Royaume-Uni. Concrete Requiem was produced in collaboration with the composer, James Bentley and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Francis Alys assisted by Birmingham City Council Department of Leisure and Culture.
