Rubberwood

A soapstone knot, a wooden coil of handles, a sculpture made of socks, some hollow wax objects, a candle with a hole, a larger knot made of handles, an African sculpture bought on e-bay, black toilet paper, a rock that looks like a Jean Arp sculpture.

While Tim was traveling between London (as BA student at Slade School) and Frankfurt (as an exchange student at Städelschule), he sent us a list of objects for possible inclusion in his show and two pictures which show a table displaying images he has been collecting over a period of time: photos downloaded from the web and modified for his own use, items bought on e-bay, prints from leaflets he picked up from FormContent's backspace.

For his first solo exhibition, Tim has been gathering different objects apparently familiar in shape and function. On the one hand, the list of items to be included in ‘Rubberwood' shows Tim ' s interest in appropriation, alteration and creation of objects, on the other hand, it gives him the chance to link all the different elements by twisting their use: whether by an object having its function removed, internet images becoming physical installations in the exhibition space or common items turning their purpose to transcend their everyday use.

The way he presented his work illustrates his playful view on the idea of sculptural value: the privacy of a domestic situation is rubbing against the idea of order implied in the collecting and disposing of these objects. Tim is testing the relation between the similar shapes of objects and their representation in their ordinary environment; at the same time he insists on the coherence of all the elements, installing based on scale: from the disparate collection of objects to the photographic works, everything finds a balance.

Furthermore Tim will give some of the objects a second life and a wider outreach by returning them to a virtual existence on the FormContent website, altering the balance once more.
