MIROSLAW BALKA
AAA + RAUCH SIGNALE

curated by Leila Topic & Branko Franceschi
organised by MMSU, Rijeka, Croatia

”Aaa ... kotki dwa,
szarobure obydwa .
Nic nie beda robily ,
tylko Ciebie bawily.”

Site specific installation AAA + RAUCH SIGNALE combines sound, light and plain wire-fence to articulate the dark and abandoned 700 m² large first floor of the late XIX century tobacco factory, destined to become the new seat of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, into Balka’s distinctive dim and nostalgic ambience. Simultaneously full and empty, built on contrasts of soft lullaby sounds and strong white lights, the ambience beckons the audience to walk towards the end of the bare wire-fence meander snaking left and right through the austere emptiness thus hinting on pursuit of personal memories within traces of the past lurking from dark corners and deep shadows of the industrial interior.

On the opening night, the 60’s Magirus fire truck parked in front of the T-building will discharge black exhaust fumes according to the text of the AAA lullaby in Polish, translated in Morse code and played by Balka on the truck’s gas pedal. The video made on the occasion will be presented during the course of the exhibition.
