The curators intention was to produce and collect works that use experimental processes to contribute to an understanding of cinema that cannot be gleaned by merely watching a movie. This approach is shared by all the artists who have been invited to participate in the show. Curated by Antje Ehmann and Harun Farocki.

Cinema like never before brings film into the exhibition space, but not to turn the
art space into a new cinema. The exhibition resembles instead an editing room, a
laboratory for cinema. This work of critical assessment has always existed in
editing rooms, ever since the birth of film. The curators intention was to produce
and collect works that use experimental processes to contribute to an understanding
of cinema that cannot be gleaned by merely watching a movie. This approach is shared
by all the artists who have been invited to participate in the show.
Cinema as never before was produced by Generali Foundation, Vienna 2006. The show in
the Academy of Arts will be presented in an extended version.
