Le nouveau monde

The purpose of Camille Henrot’s work is to question the process of artistic creation as such. Its field of application is the Fine Arts, such as cinema, music or architecture, which become industry and art craft at the same time. Within these fields, Camille Henrot explores the possibilities of integration and cross-fertilizations. Hence she modifies cultural products, by addition, subtraction or division, to bring out their true nature – as exemplified by “King Kong Addition” presented at the Tokyo Palace, “Room Movies” at the Dominique Fiat gallery, “Karaoké Chorale” during the “Nuit blanche 2007”, or “The Minimum of Life” at the Geneva CIC.

Camille Henrot’s unique approach enlightens the works she studies. The “New World” of this latest exhibition’s title refers to Yona Friedman’s apartment., as seen by Camille Henrot. Yona Friedman is himself an artist, a visionary architect, an urbanist, who’s goal is to build “feasible utopias”. The Camille Henrot exhibition presents her interpretation of Yona Friedman’s apartment, involving a deconstruction of its space and a reflection upon the temporalities gathered within. Yoan Friedman’s apartment is seen as an abstract and symbolic volume in which gravity and perspective seem unreal.

the result is an archaeology of representation, a quest for the surviving aesthetic and primitive thinking in today’s world. Yona’s apartment becomes an accomplished utopia, anticipating a future that does not destroy the past but superposes on it. This concept of superposing is also that of the book, presenting in photos and faxes the exchanges about the project between Yona Friedman and Camille Henrot. The result is a book of superposed strata, each author adding a tracing and comments upon the initial model.

“Le nouveau monde” exhibition is co-produced by Les Collections de Saint Cyprien, the Fine Art Museum of Bordeaux and the Kamel Mennour gallery (Paris). The exhibition is presented in a first version in Saint Cyprien (May 18th 2007 to Sept 30th 2007), and a modified version in Bordeaux (from October 2007 onwards).
