Local and ArtSway + 10

ArtSway celebrates it’s 10th anniversary in 2007. The centre for contemporary art in the New Forest is preparing for a summer of local and international exhibitions and events to mark the occasion. ArtSway’s tenth anniversary exemplify ArtSway’s innovative approach to supporting artists and exhibiting their work, while also offering audiences and communities a wide range of creative opportunities.

New Forest Pavilion - Local (a companion exhibition to New Forest Pavilion, 52 International Art Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia - see below) brings together the work of five artists who have previously undertaken residencies at ArtSway: Simon Faithfull, Beate Gütschow, Anne Hardy, Igloo and Melanie Manchot, and Stanza: an artist nominated by SCAN (Southern Collaborative Arts Network) which is hosted at ArtSway. New Forest Pavilion - Local brings together these six international artists whose work explores, in a variety of methodologies and approaches, the experience of transformation, modification and change with an alternative selection of work to that exhibited in Venice.

In addition ArtSway+10 is an exhibition celebrating ArtSway’s first ten years, and features small works invited from artists who have exhibited at ArtSway over the last decade (see below).

Simon Faithful was artist in residence at ArtSway in 2003. He was the first visual artist to receive an ACE Fellowship with the British Antarctic Survey, and will be exhibiting etched ‘light’ drawings produced from initial Palm Pilot sketches made during this trip - simple line drawings reflecting the sparse environment of the Antarctic. Beate Gütschow, a German photographer and video artist, undertook a residency in 2006 in partnership with the Goethe-Institut, London, and recently exhibited two new video works at ArtSway which will be exhibited in Venice. Audiences at ArtSway will have the chance to see one of Beate’s S series photographs: black and white photomontages of modernist architecture in a dystopic disaster scene that compliments the more utopian rural images that the artist exhibited at ArtSway earlier in 2007. London-based photographer Anne Hardy was artist in residence at ArtSway in 2004, and will be exhibiting two new photographs at ArtSway, entirely fabricated interior scenes which the artist constructs in her studio. Indicating obsessive behaviour hidden in a sealed room, Hardy’s photographs create the strange worlds of an obsessive plant breeder and space station enthusiast at their ‘outpost’ through the objects they have collected around them.

Igloo (Ruth Gibson and Bruno Martelli), celebrated internationally for their interactive art works, invite artists from a range of disciplines to work with them. They were artists in residence at ArtSway in 2005. Igloo will be exhibiting video works and lenticular prints from Summerbranch (2005/06) which explore dance, simulation and camouflage in the New Forest context. Melanie Manchot is best known for her photographs that capture intimacy and identity, in a sensitive, yet dispassionate manner. The artist has photographed those close to her (such as her mother) and complete strangers. The photographs exhibited at ArtSway were taken by the artist after she found a series of pre-war postcards of Berlin buildings with the residents photographed outside. Manchot asked the current residents to be photographed in a similar manner, and both postcard and contemporary photograph will be exhibited together. Stanza is a London based artist, specialising in net art, networked spaces, installations and performances, and has exhibited extensively internationally. He has one awards from festivals such as Videoformes Multimedia First Prize, and was a NESTA Dreatime Fellow in 2004 - 2005. Stanza was nominated for inclusion in New Forest Pavilion by SCAN. The touch-screen interactive work, Subvergence (2000 - 2001) a self-referential explosion of data using computer icons, scripts and codes will be exhibited at ArtSway.

ArtSway +10 accompanies New Forest Pavilion - Local. ArtSway invited artists that have exhibited in the past decade to submit small works to celebrate ArtSway, the gallery and its work. This small exhibition includes over 40 artists work including: Alison Turnbull, Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, Richard Deacon, Frank Bowling, Shaun Doyle & Mally Mallinson, Emilia Telese and Charlie Murphy.

New Forest Pavilion, 52nd International Art Exhibition la Biennale di Venezia, shows an alternative selection of work from the same artists, to an international audience at one of the foremost contemporary art festivals in the world. New Forest Pavilion takes place between 10 June and 1 July at Palazzo Zenobio, in the Dorsoduro district of Venice as part of the 52nd International Art Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia. Gallery Talk: New Forest Pavilion Explored: Saturday 26 May 2007 at 3pm
Join Mark Segal, Director of ArtSway; Helen Sloan, Director of SCAN; and Stephanie James, MA Course Leader Fine Art, Arts Institute at Bournemouth, for an informal tour of New Forest Pavilion - Local. The talk will focus on New Forest Pavilion at ArtSway and in Venice and the relevance of these exhibitions to ArtSway’s residency and audience development programmes, SCAN’s innovative curatorial approach, and AIB’s text + work programme. Artist Talk: Saturday 7 July 2007 at 3pm
Anne Hardy will discuss her work and practice, her experiences of New Forest Pavilion - Local and in Venice, and the importance of international exhibitions to her career development. FREE
