Middle Years
Trolley is proud to present the first London solo show by Philip Jones
Griffiths. As the world’s most renowned photographer of the Viet Nam
conflict his work brought to the fore the results of the US presence in the
country and was intrinsically responsible for changing public opinion in the
States against the war. Critical and charged with humanity, his images
presented a monumental truth, showing the painfully visible trail the
American invasion was leaving, and was still to leave, on the country.
This new exhibition presents a period much closer to home, with a departure
towards many previously unseen images taken of Britain in the 1960s and 70s.
‘Middle Years’ depicts social affairs and landmark events over two decades
of change and upheaval in this country. Over these years he covers a full
spectrum of social and political importance occurring in Britain. ‘Middle
Years’ presents a domestic revolution, from a photographer whose
international fame covering a country on the other side of the world is now
put in the context of his equally incisive work at home.
Born in Rhuddlan, Wales, Philip Jones Griffiths studied pharmacy in
Liverpool and worked in London while photographing part-time for the
"Manchester Guardian". He covered the Algerian War in 1962, then moved to
Central Africa. From there he moved to Asia, photographing in Vietnam from
1966 to 1968. He returned to Vietnam in 1970, and became famous for his 1971
book on the war, Vietnam Inc. An associate member of Magnum since 1966,
Griffiths became a member in 1971. In 1980, Griffiths moved to New York to
assume the presidency of Magnum, a post that he held for a record five
years. Trolley is the publisher of his two most recent books, Agent Orange –
Collateral Damage in Viet Nam (2003) and Viet Nam at Peace (2005).
The exhibition ‘Philip Jones Griffiths – Middle Years’ is to be held both in
conjunction with the opening of PhotoLondon, which opens on 31st May 2007,
and the 60th anniversary celebrations of Magnum.
