"Das Westzimmer". Part of the installation ?Das Westzimmer? is a card, a kind of ?mobile element? that shows on one side a Chinese woodcut from 1640 and on the other the ground plan of the gallery and an elevation of the installation. The woodcut illustrates a puppet theatre, and on the stage the playing out of an important wedding. This wedding is simultaneously taking place elsewhere, thus the performance becomes something like a ?live broadcast?.

Like the woodcut Hörnschemeyer's installation is entitled
?DasWestzimmer? (The West Room). With this quotation the artist not only
refers to the actual position of the gallery space, but also to her
analysis of the spatial-temporal shift the woodcut represents. In her
?Westzimmer? Hörnschemeyer combines, for the first time, materials from
different phases of her work.
As the combination of these different material implies, ?Das Westzimmer?
condenses several of Franka Hörnschemeyer's artistic interests. The use
of the ceiling system, as well as temporary, panelled walls refers to
the inherently fake character of these prefab parts often used in
interior building - fake since these elements convey a feeling of
firmness and stability that the actual material does not possess. The
modular steel framework elements, normally used for building concrete
walls, are deprived of their original function - as supports or scaffold
- yet used to construct a space.
While the materials she used before defined body and space, in "Das
Westzimmer" she uses elements that focus on surface structure - the
ceiling panels, the ?mock-Tudor? wallpaper, and the metal gridwork.
Further works by Franka Hörnschemeyer are currently on display at the
Hamburger Kunsthalle , PSE 900 at the Lehmbruck-Saal , and the piece
Anlage 898S3 at the Paul-Löbe- Haus, German Bundestag. There is also a
substantial new work in development, in collaboration with the company
Peri GmbH, for the Kapinos Gallery stand at Artforum Berlin, 2001.
