Site Inscription at Paul Rodgers/9W Gallery from June 7 to July 21, 2007 is curated by Terri C. Smith with Lauren Benanti, Daniel Byers, graduate students at Bard College's Center for Curatorial Studies. The exhibition is a partnership with the Bard College Photography Department directed by Stephen Shore. Featured in the show are works by David Bush, Tim Davis, Ahndraya Parlato, Paul Salveson, and Stephen Sollins. The works in the exhibition consciously engage the simultaneous exchange that occurs when photographing. Each artist's practice resonates to varying degrees with the idea posited by photography scholar Peter Osborne, that "Photography, too, marks our presence in a place, or rather, has the place mark its presence in our images"
Osborne further remarks, "how the traveler's look is also a form of writing, an inscribing of the self on the world, the utterance of a desire to absorb it by visual possession and at the same time to saturate it with consciousness and fill the ontological void between the self and the world."
Site Inscription includes images from David Bush's Surface series, abstract photographs that allude to mark making and writing; photographs from Tim Davis's Retail and Permanent Collection series that explore the ability of reflected light to illuminate inscriptions and erasures respectively; the precise, surreal and often humorous constructed photographs of Ahndraya Parlato and Paul Salveson; and drawings from Stephen Sollins's Static series in which newspaper TV schedules are systematically obscured using Whiteout.
