Skulptur projekte Munster 07

LWL-Landesmuseum fur Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Munster

The title of the exhibition is more than just a name: as in previous years, the artists participating in the 2007 exhibition examine the character of contemporary sculpture, its self-positioning in as well as its capacity to change the appearance of public space. As in 1977, 1987, and 1997, sculpture projects will examine the interdependence between the arts, the city, and the public. Accompanied by a program of lectures, readings, film screenings, and conversations with artists. Curated by Kasper König and Brigitte Franzen.

comunicato stampa

Fourth edition. 37 artists.

curated by Kasper König, Brigitte Franzen and Carina Plath

The fourth international sculpture projects muenster opens in the summer of 2007. Since 1977 this large exhibition invites artists from all over the world to create new work in the city of Muenster. The events have put Muenster on the map of world renowned addresses for contemporary art.

sculpture projects muenster 07 opens on June 16, 2007 and runs parallel with the documenta in Kassel, from June 17 to September 30, 2007. For one hundred days, the exhibition will put its stamp on the city and the region. In 1997 more than 500.000 visitors came to Muenster to see the work of artists from 25 countries. This large attendance certainly raises similar expectations for 2007.

The curators Prof. Kasper König (Museum Ludwig, Cologne) and Dr. Brigitte Franzen (Westphalian State Museum, Muenster), and Associate Curator Dr. Carina Plath (Westphalian Art Association, Muenster) have invited 37 artists to participate in the exhibition.

The title of the exhibition, sculpture projects, is more than just a name: as in previous years, the artists participating in the 2007 exhibition will again examine the character of contemporary sculpture, its self-positioning in as well as its capacity to change the appearance of public space. As in 1977, 1987, and 1997, sculpture projects will examine the interdependence between the arts, the city, and the public. The sculptures will be created mostly in Muenster and installed throughout the city. By incorporating the works of art, the city gradually changes its face – a dynamic process is set in motion.

The exhibition sculpture projects is primarily funded by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL), an association of regional communities, the city of Muenster, and the federal state of North-Rhine Westphalia. sculpture projects muenster 07 is organized by the Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History.

Accompanying Program

In order to facilitate discussions about art in public spaces and examine the subject from various critical and cultural angles, sculpture projects muenster 07 will be accompanied by a program of lectures, readings, film screenings, and artist talks.

During the summer semester 2006 and the winter semester 2006/07, sculpture projects muenster 07 collaborates with the Academy of Fine Arts Muenster in organizing a Preview titled “Vorspann”. This series of public lectures and workshops for art students is held by artists participating in the exhibition. A publication of the contributions to this series is planned for February 2007.

Before the official opening of the exhibition and starting at the beginning of 2007, the projektbar will be held at the office of sculpture projects muenster 07 (Rothenburg 30) on the first Thursday of each month. The program will be organized in cooperation with the city of Muenster’s Office of Cultural Affairs.

In addition a series of talks and panel discussions bringing together scholars from the University of Muenster with national and international speakers to discuss the relationship of art and public space is planned for June 2007. This collaborative project of the University of Muenster and sculpture projects muenster 07 will highlight the various contexts of the exhibition from both interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives.

In connection with the exhibition, the Muenster Film Club will screen a series of films addressing the subject of “City, Space, and the Public.”

“FreihausMS,” an action group of architects, journalists, photographers, and designers from Muenster, will make various aspects of “The City” the focus of a series of talks and discussions known as the “Hausgespraeche” or “In-House Conversations”.
