The contemporary art exhibition progettoggetto, curated by Stefano Coletto, is opening on Friday 22 June 2007 at 6.30pm. The first of a series of events in spaces outside Pistoia’s Galleria SpazioA contemporanearte, the exhibition marks the beginning of the InsideOut project, the aim of which is to find new and stimulating occasions for showing work in other spaces in the historic centre of Pistoia and not just in the gallery itself. Palazzo Bracciolini delle Api, which is hosting progettooggetto, dates to the beginning of the 17th century and is owned by the Bracciolini family. The group show featuring the work of young, emerging Italian and foreign artists is on the ground floor of the building.

In a period of aesthetic change brought about by the development of new media and the increasing use of audiovisual technology and digital design, it makes sense to ask what strategies are being adopted by young artists today in their approach to objects. The goal of the exhibition is to address this issue and to involve emerging artists.

The first thing that comes to mind when talking about objects in art is sculpture or design. Sculpture suggests notions of form articulated in space, with its own specific norms, historic tradition and poetics. However, the exhibition does not deal with sculpture, which a historic, artistic and aesthetic line of inquiry has variously transformed into the multimedia installations of artists like Nam June Paik, relational works as in Beuys, body sculptures as in the Body Art of Gilbert and George or into works that interact with the landscape and the primordial elements of nature, as in Land Art and Arte Povera.

Considering the object today means talking not of a work that is complete in itself but of the realization of something that is part of a broader constellation and of a wider significance. Human cognitive activities have always been based on the relation between subject and object, between an individual who perceives and knows and the world of things, situations and environments that stands before him.

The artistic object is what we produce but also what then stands before us. It is almost an instrument, a material element that is fundamental to the construction of personal stories, a linking element for existential, psychological and aesthetic considerations. Design conceives of objects bearing in mind a functionality that is not only formal but also tactile, visual, imaginative. Design dwells in broad terms upon the norms of use. In the field of art, on the other hand, the object is there to be played with and discussed, observed and erased, but also taken and destroyed. The artist considers each and every one of these possibilities, focusing on the boundary of the object, in the sense of the limit experience that can induce the presence of the object in the life of the individual; conceptual art has also introduced the disappearance of the three-dimensionality of the object as art work.

The ten artists and their works seem to be allusion to 10clicks by Limiteazero(http://limiteazero.net/p5/index.html), in which a piece of software makes it possible in 10 clicks of the mouse to build a form that can then be rotated as we please. Similarly, the exhibition is an occasion for creating an active space for conceiving, building and reflecting upon some possible materializations of the object.
