Jo Jackson and Chris Johanson

Marella Gallery is pleased to present Peaceable Kingdom: an exhibition characterized by the fertile collaboration of two american artists: Jo Jackson and Chris Johanson. Will be presented installations, videos and a group of drawings which had beed realized by both of them. The two different visual researches are linked by the common longing for a peaceable kingdom, expressing both esthetic and ethic values.

Jo Jackson's work deals with the oniric, provocative and ambiguous side of human identity. The artist's restless sensibility shapes fascinating visions halfway from fairy tail to nightmare, often focusing on time, death and rebirth topics (How I survived, 2004).

Her vivid use of dazzling colors, together with shocking contrasts, emphasize the iconic value of symbols, such as handless clocks, trees and floating skulls. Reminding the avantgarde lesson of Yves Klein, Jo Jackson still works on different media (such as painting, videoanimation, sculpture) in order to continue to enrich her protean research with new motifs.

Chris Johanson is well known for his often political, always social paintings and installations where he reflects upon the realization of a peaceful coexistence utopia. Johanson's works are often crowded by a plenty of different urban figures, from sick businessmen to drunken hippies, struggling for their own pleasure and looking for their personal way to self-realization. Even through his typical colorful shapes and geometric patterns Johanson tries to symbolize all the contradictions and the value conflicts in contemporary society.
