Winner’s Circle

Western Project is proud to present the first Los Angeles exhibition by Vincent Valdez. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Valdez now embraces Southern California as his residence and inspiration. Winner’s Circle, a new series of paintings and drawings, is his first solo exhibition since his museum show, Stations, traveled the U.S. during 2005 and 2006.

This exhibition continues Valdez’s interest in boxing imagery; nine paintings of cropped faces – fighters standing in the so called moment of glory – looking upward, in dazed victory. The paintings depict a moment in time, of courage and human struggle. His prize fighters are allegorical, each a reflection of possible triumph amidst a world of opposing odds.

Valdez recently completed an eighteen month project with Ry Cooder: A mural painted on the body of a vintage delivery truck. The mural depicts the former Chavez Ravine, a predominantly Hispanic village of Los Angeles. The neighborhood was obliterated in the 1950s to create Dodger stadium, and generations of residents were displaced. The work will be exhibited at the Peterson Automotive museum in Los Angeles, beginning October 25, 2007.

Opening reception: Saturday, September 15, 5 – 8 pm
