Blood, Sweat 'n tears
Upstairs berlin is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Anna Genger. For her first
solo exhibition with the gallery – following her participation in our group show Solitude. London
Artists Today in 2006 – the German artist presents a cycle of paintings ranging from small- to
large-sized. Dark, biotic metamorphoses, broken by strikingly bright colours, lead to a Borgesian
labyrinth in which the viewer gets lost. The paintings allow him to escape into a fantastic world.
Anna Genger combines organisms from flora
and fauna with newly invented forms: elusive,
inconceivable, intensely emotional. Her impetuous
compositions are filled with dramatic violence.
Infiltrating delicate elements of pure beauty, she
tells us of her world, a world between harmony
and dissonance.
In her paintings, Anna Genger bares her
innermost. Pain, grief, joy and desire. Life and
death. Love and hate. Paradox and ambiguity are
characteristic of her work. Inspired by apparently
trivial private conversations, sentimental songs
on the radio, profound poems, her works
symbolically reflect her subjective experience of
the world.
Genger’s oeuvre has a materiality which emphasises
the physical act of painting itself as an essential
aspect of the finished work. For her, painting is
the sublime entity that she needs to exist. For
beauty is about being alive.
Anna Genger (born in Hamburg, Germany in 1978) lives and works in London and Hamburg.
Having graduated from London's Royal College of Art in 2007, she has exhibited internationally
and recently received the artist-in-residence grant of Parc Saint Léger – Centre d’Art Contemporain
de Pougues-les-Eaux in France.
A fully illustrated catalogue in colour with a text by Petra Henninger will accompany the
exhibition.
