Cinema and art from Abramovic to Warhol
This year's KunstFilmBiennale, which takes place from 18 to 24 October in Cologne
and for the first time also in Bonn, has expanded its programme. In addition to its
geographical expansion, the other big first this year is that cinematic art will be shown
alongside art film. In the Odeon cinema in Cologne and the Rex movie theatre in Bonn, a
total of seven artistically outstanding cinema films will be screened: The winner of this year's
Cannes Golden Palm, "4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days" (4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile) by
Rumanian director Cristian Mungiú will kick off the programme in Bonn on 17 October. The
romantic comedy "Cashback" by Sean Ellis, the German production "Die Unerzogenen"
(The badly brought-up) by Pia Marais and the German premiere of Swedish cult director Roy
Andersson's latest work "You the Living", and others, will follow.
The entries for the International Competition and the competition for the Bild-Kunst
Förderpreis für experimentellen Film (Bild-Kunst award for experimental film) will be
screened this year again at the Filmforum at the Museum Ludwig and the Kölnischer
Kunstverein. Audiences can enjoy a total of some 100 current entries into the two
competitions. A large number of guests have already committed to attending the
competitions personally, including the directors of the competition films "A Walk into the
Sea", Esther B. Robinson, and "Prater", Ulrike Ottinger, as well as the artists Jesper Just,
Marina Abramovic and Gabriela Fridriksdóttir, whose film "Ouroboros" will be celebrating
its world premiere at the Iceland Special.
Other highlights are the retrospectives that will take place in the Museum Ludwig in
Cologne and in the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, e.g. of the Iranian artist living in New York Shirin
Neshat, who has just wrapped up her first feature film, and of Sarah Morris from America,
who will be presenting five cinematic city portraits that successfully and uniquely apply the
grid technique of her abstract painting work to documentary film. The latest film by the
underground pioneer Wilhelm Hein will be shown in the special programme at the
Kölnischer Kunstverein, as well as the five-hour director's cut of "Brinkmanns Zorn"
(Brinkmann's wrath) in cooperation with the Literaturhaus Köln. In addition, the multichannel
installation "The Perfectionist" by Julian Rosefeldt, an artist living in Berlin, will be
shown in the Baukunst Galerie in Cologne.
To accompany the programme, an expert symposium will take place on Sunday, 21
October at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne on the topic of "Art – Film – Art", with
presentations by well known artists, filmmakers and curators.
