2' Biennal of Quadrilater BQ_2. (Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia)

After a success of 1st Biennial of Quadrilateral, its second edition aims to bring together exciting artworks, artists and art professionals in order to shed a light, scrutinize, envisage and portray the contemporary culture hero.

Based on a diplomatic initiative of Quadrilateral, the Biennial presents artists from Croatia, Hungary, Italy and Slovenia as selected by a curator from each respective country after reaching consent on a biennial’s theme. After the decision of the BQ_2 curatorial team: Rita Kálmán (Hungary), Sabina Salamon (Croatia), Nevenka Sivavec (Slovenia) and Vittorio Urbani (Italy), the second edition will address a contemporary discourse on a forgotten concept of the culture hero.

“The culture hero is neither a vocation, nor a disease, which is a probable reason why nobody never systematically engaged in standardization of that status, although the culture hero existed in ancient native mythologies as an inventor, revolutionary, clan founder, sometimes a trickster or semi-god. We are left with a question – who is the culture hero today? In any case, proclamation of the culture hero is an extremely democratic act, since s/he is chosen by majority. An individual can have his/her hero who, as a rule, remains anonymous, outside the collective memory. The culture hero is a social category and a cultural phenomenon that can be observed at both national and global levels. BQ_2 has a chance of deepening the theme of the culture hero, presuming that social conditions in each of four neighbouring countries (Hungary, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia) generate other and different heroes.” (Sabina Salamon on the behalf of the curatorial team)

On December 7 invited artists Mladen Stilinovic and Dragan Zivadinov as well as theoretician Dejan Krsic will gather for a public panel discussion conceived by the artist Lara Badurina and moderated by curator Sabina Salamon, to exchange opinions, observations and analyses on the (im)possibility of cultural heroism today.

Panel discussion will be broadcasted live on local and regional radio and television stations.
