An exhibition of 13 artists & 13 curators
During the FIAC 2007, Sorbonne University’s Curatorial Masters program and L’Ecole
National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) will present the
exhibition PRESSION A FROID at the Réfectoire des Cordeliers.
Upon entering the exhibition, the resonating naval sounds of maritime ports invite you to embark
on a strange and intriguing itinerary through the 700m² space. Do not be discouraged. You
need only to follow the bats projected in dark corners and onto the walls of this historical
monument, the Réfectoire des Cordeliers.
Contemporary artworks, as diverse and heterogeneous as the members of this team, have been
assembled for a voyage of illusions. The result of a collaboration between 13 young curators
and 13 artists from the Beaux-Arts of Paris, the exhibition represents a reservoir of ideas “under
pressure”.
PRESSION A FROID is a metaphor of double meaning. This title reflects the contradictions of
our contemporary society that the curators and artists from the same generation (the majority
born in the 1980s) wanted seize on the occasion of this exhibition. The first cold pressing
renders an essence that is both sweet and sour. At the same time pure and exquisite, it is also
a rare essence and therefore ephemeral and fragile.
This process is representative of the works in the exhibition, whose sometimes humoristic
derision belies an essence that is fatally tragic. All the works reveal hybrid perceptions that
disturb everyday context: a stable workout bike in the midst of the Tour de France, domestic
objects stripped of their use, a banner slogan that is indecipherable.
Over the length of this one week exhibition, evening events focusing on the issues of curatorial
work and exhibitions, as well as artists’ video projections and performances have been
programmed. An exhibition catalogue, edited by ENSBA, partner of PRESSION A FROID, will
be published on the occasion of the exhibition. Each curator is the author of a critical text about
an artist being exhibited.
