100 years after the triumph of photography, the Centre of Attention
presents A Man, A Woman, A Machine. This is an exhibition with a twist: an
acerbic, witty take on the age-old story of the impact of a beautiful woman
on a man.
While its message may be on the redeeming power of true love, A Man, A
Woman, A Machine has something to say on Romance, Modern Art and the social
cut-and-thrust of the upwardly mobile nouveau riche, and does so with
sparkling humour, real visual dexterity and against a backdrop of ravishing
ideas. Photography has never seemed so dazzling.

Oreet Ashery, Shaheen Merali & Manuel Vason
Oreet Ashery is a Jewish female live artist. Shaheen Merali is a black male
artist. Manuel Vason, a former assistant to Nick Knight and live art
photographer, witnesses their morphing into each other’s ethnic and
gender identity.
Gary O Dwyer
Gary O Dwyer is a painter, video artist and photographer. He directs and
has curated many of the Centre of Attentions exhibitions. In 2001, he
exhibited at Studio Voltaire in Clapham and at the Notting Hill Arts Club.
His video work was selected for the Pandemonium Festival 2001 at the Lux
and is currently featuring in the Leeds International Film Festival.
Carly Rogers
Carly Rogers studied textiles at Winchester and graduated this year in
printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Her work was exhibited at the Pump
House Gallery in September.
Leon Steele
Winner of the John Kobal Photography Award 2000 at the National Portrait
Gallery, Leon Steele appears in this show courtesy of Houldsworth Gallery.
Liu Zheng
Liu Zheng is one of China s foremost young contemporary photographer. He
graduated in 1991 and started as a photojournalist for the newspaper The
Worker's Daily. covering the mining industry. His work has been exhibited
at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Smart Museum of Art in Chicago and in
Tokyo. He recently took part in Chinese Conceptual Photography at the Loft
Gallery, Paris (2001) and in Next Generation, Passage de Retz, Paris
(2001). This is the first time his work is exhibited in the UK. Liu Zheng
lives and works in Beijing.
The Centre of Attention
The Centre of Attention is a non-profit, no commission, no funding,
independent contemporary art gallery in its third year. It is directed and
curated by Pierre Coinde and Gary O Dwyer. Previous exhibitions have
included established artists like Franko B, Orlan, Genesis P-Orridge, Fiona
Banner as well as emerging artists such as Jasper Joffe, Nooshin Farhid,
Luke Caulfield or Katharina Heilein.
This exhibition A Man, A Woman, A
Machine; is part of Photomonth, a major new event inspired by Paris Mois de
la Photo; taking place in over 15 galleries and spaces around London City
and East End.

launched in December.
