Gran Via 67
What is art's role in society? Can art be utilized and if so, for what?
Since the late 1980s, Jorge Pardo (1963 Cuban born, Los Angeles based
artist) has been creating extraordinary works that cross the boundaries of
art, design, and architecture, often defying genre and definition. Always
reacting to the given context, the spatial, social and historical dimensions
of various places are decisive for Pardo's art, for which reason the artist
always designates his works as sculptures, irrespective of the media he
uses.
He has created large-scale projects for museums as well as other sort of
venues throughout the world. In 2000 he completely transformed the space of
the Dia Center for the Arts in New York infusing the ground floor with
natural and refracted light by means of a lively palette of ceramic tiles;
in 1998 he presented the project of a house, 4166 Sea View Lane, in the
context of a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles;
or in 1997 planned a temporary pier for Sculpture Project Munster that then
became permanent.
In Madrid, Jorge Pardo´s will prove once again that his work consistently
blurs the boundaries between several creative disciplines by designing the
interior space of a 25 square meters apartment located in the centre of the
city. On the occasion of this show, the exhibiting space will move to Gran
Vía 67 - Madrid while Elba Benítez gallery will be transformed into a place
for consulting Pardo´s bibliography providing the visitor a specialized
knowledge on all his architectural and site-specific projects all around the
world.
