STAG: THE AFRICAN-FRENCH CONNECTION, Passerelle Culturelle

The State Theatre Art Gallery (STAG) begins the new millennium with an international graphic print exhibition.

The African-French Connection is the result of a relationship built between French and South African artists when, in July 1999, six South African print makers were invited to exhibit in France. Selected from an exhibition held at the STAG, Mimi van der Merwe, André Naudé, Lucas Bambo, Hetta Vonsteen, Magda van Staden and Annelise Bouker Marais enjoyed the opportunity of exhibiting their work alongside 6 critically acclaimed French graphic artists. The STAG will now host a reciprocal exhibition here, in an effort to build cultural bridges between the two countries.

In addition to these 12 artists, the French renowned modernist, Pierre Courtins, will exhibit alongside a host of South African graphic artists, including Norman Catherine and Zwelethu Mthethwa. Approximately 80 works will be shown in the first international exhibition in the history of the STAG.

Gallery hours are 10:00 - 16:00 Monday to Friday, and 10:00 - 13:00 on Saturday. STAG will also be open in the evenings during all performances in the Drama and Opera theatres.
