(Boston) "ODES (TO A PLANET)" arrives at a significant juncture in
all our lives. Paying tribute to the beauty and tragedy of the
relationship between humans and the planet we inhabit, "ODES" is a
creation of Marjorie Morgan and her performance art troupe, Not
Frida, and is comprised of four unique works that combine movement,
text and sound/music. Enhanced by presenting to different audience
configurations in two separate rooms, this performance collage is
specifically designed to create an intimate and ever changing
audience-performer relationship. The program includes the premieres
of The Beginning, She Psalms and Migrations, and the Boston premiere
of a video created collaboratively by Croatian filmmaker Dan Oki,
Boston trombonist Tom Plsek, and Marjorie Morgan.
Regarding Morgan's work, Boston critics have made such glowing
statements as: "Morgan creates not only idiosyncratic, original
choreography, but composes and performs the music and poetic text
that accompany her fascinating dances. She's assembled a small group
of confident performers to present this unique work, Not Frida" (Bay
Windows) and "the most original dance maker in Boston" (Boston
Globe). She has consistently received "Top Ten Dance Event"
recognition for her work, most notably from the Boston Globe (1996 &
1998) and the Boston Phoenix (1999). Morgan continues to captivate
audiences and critics alike with her rich repertoire of movement text
and original music.
Morgan has teamed up with longtime colleagues to create Not Frida, an
exciting group of dancers, musicians and artists committed to
creating original works for intimate settings. Not Frida includes
such talents as Alison Ball, rosS Hamlin, Hana van der Kolk, Tom
Plsek, Whitney Robbins, Janet Slifka and Jody Weber.
(Principal Bio.) Marjorie Morgan, a member of the Mobius Artists
Group, is a performance artist, writer, composer, choreographer and
musician. Originally from Vermont, Morgan went to Oberlin College
where she received a BA in Dance and the Louis Sudler Arts Award. She
has performed in projects with Bill T. Jones and Robert Davidson, and
has danced in the companies of Pooh Kaye, Paula Josa-Jones, Snappy
Productions, Caitlin Corbett, and Brian Crabtree. Morgan has shown
her own performance collage works at various venues in Boston, New
York and Washington DC. Morgan teaches movement and voice at The
School of the Museum of Fine Arts and The Boston Conservatory. She is
the artistic director of Not Frida and also a member of The St.
Botolph Club.
In 2001, Mobius has been granted a Boston's Best Performance Art
award by The Improper Bostonian. "For more than 21 years, Mobius has
been the city's premiere venue for experimental art, programming a
42-week roller-coaster ride of events that range from
consciousness-raising to the downright bizarre. The annual ArtRages
fundraiser is one of the funkiest and most fun happenings in town,
and the group's commitment to the Fort Point artists' community is
one of the few things standing between it and the developers'
wrecking ball. Our hats are off to them."
