comunicato stampa

Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, presents an exhibition of photographs by Joakim Eskildsen. In the period from 2000 to 2006, Eskildsen, together with author Cia Rinne, travelled in Hungary, India, Greece, Rumania, France, Finland and Russia to meet Roma and gain insight into their situation. The exhibition is divided into countries and offers a contemporary and personal view of this, Europe’s largest minority. Three overall themes run together in Joakim Eskildsen’s photos: man, nature and mysticism - the latter understood as an immediate, substantial experience and in particular as an intuitive approach to reality. Eskildsen’s own approach to these people is one of openness and empathy. During this project, he and Cia Rinne for periods of time often shared the living conditions of the people they were documenting. Closeness and participation are the prerequisites for this artistic documentary undertaking.

Joakim Eskildsen works in a highly conscious manner with both composition and light. The suggestive power of his works emanates not only from their subject matter, but also from their formal construction and the mood evoked by their colouring. He shows us scenes saturated with light and life - and yet they always retain a trace of the eternal, the quiet portrait in the middle of chaos. As a result, these photos, despite their vivaciousness, appear tightly composed.

Joakim Eskildsen, born 1971, started his education with Rigmor Mydtskov in Copenhagen. In 1994, he moved to Finland to pursue the art of creating photographic books with Pentti Sammallahti, and he graduated from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki with an MA in photography in 1998. The exhibition will include a sound installation with music and sounds from the various countries, recorded by Cia Rinne and edited by sound director Sebastian Eskildsen. The 100 photos of the exhibition are presented in the book “The Roma Journeys [Le romané phirimàta]” with texts by Cia Rinne and a preface by Günter Grass. The book will be published in English and German by Steidl in connection with the exhibition at Nikolaj and will also contain a CD with sound material.

Opening november 22 AT 5 - 7 PM
Project leader, MA, Tove Thage opens the exhibition. Tove Thage is the leader of the project ”forvandlinger.dk” in which Joakim Eskildsen is one of the selected artists.
