The collaborative duo of artists works in a variety of media exploring different relationships between people and their social and political environments in surreal and often absurd ways. Limbo-land is a film of lunar exploration at dawn and dusk. This presentation at Baltic has been programmed to coincide with an outdoor projection of the work commissioned and staged by Glow 07 from 4 -17 December next to the Fire Station on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle.
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art presents Limbo-Land by collaborative duo Zoë Walker
and Neil Bromwich. The work will be on show in the Level 2 Gallery at BALTIC from Tuesday
4 December until Sunday 6 January and is presented in collaboration with culture10 at
NewcastleGateshead Initiative.
The opening of Limbo-Land at BALTIC coincides with an outdoor projection of Limbo-Land
which is part of Glow 07, a series of contemporary illuminations and artworks projected
through light that will be shown from Monday 4 to Monday 17 December around Newcastle
and Gateshead during the Winter Festival. Limbo-Land will be shown adjacent to the Fire
Station on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle.
Walker and Bromwich are renowned for their ambitious projects, crossing the divide between
the gallery and the public realm, and exploring the space between real landscape and
imagined places. Within this liminal space the duo creates objects and situations that lead us
on transformative experiences, whilst inviting us to consider an ‘other’ way of being.
Limbo-Land is a space of oblivion, confinement, or transition. It is also an unspecified region
between dreams and reality where frontiers are undetermined and negotiated. The work,
which is concerned with precisely these in-between states and places, comprises a
mesmerising video installation shot at dusk and an illuminated inflatable moon measuring 2.5
metres in diameter. The uncanny presence of the moon within the confines of the gallery walls
represents the juxtaposition of lightness and weight. Similarly within the film, the astronaut
protagonist, the artist herself, is caught between land and sky, an amateur comically caught in
a forestalled lift-off.
Limbo-Land is presented in association with Houldsworth, London.
Limbo-Land is on show at BALTIC as part of Glow 07, curated by Isabel Vasseur, one of three
key events taking place during this year’s NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival. The festival of
light is a free month-long festival (Dec 4 – 31) developed by culture10 based at
NewcastleGateshead Initiative, in partnership with Gateshead Council and Newcastle City
Council. It forms part of NewcastleGateshead’s programme of world-class festivals and events
for 2007. For more information visit http://www.NewcastleGateshead.com/winter_festival
