comunicato stampa

The gallery is pleased to present two new installations by Norwegian artist, Knut Asdam. It is his second solo-show at Galleri Tommy Lund.

Asdam utilises sound, video, photography and architecture in his work, which engages with a social, psychological and political understanding of place and the body. The remnants of utopic social practices, like protest and dance, and a narrative understanding of actual social spaces are important in the work.

His video installation Notes Towards a Dissipation of Desire (2001) combines photographs, drawings and moving images of protesters, police and city architecture. The audio part, a poetic monologue, is the main structuring device of the work. The work deals with political desire and the search for political meaning, while it hints at the limitations of political expression and the breakdown of language leading to a condition of apathy.

Psychastenia 10 series 2 (2000-2001) is an architectural slide-projection installation with no sound. The projected images show modern and postmodern apartment buildings at night. They are bleak and induce a sense of fantasy and delirium - while the social references remain clear. The installation is contained within a soft architectural structure. It is framed by a curtain system like the ones used in connection with film and theatre productions. This carries with it the sense of a set, but also that of a changing room or a confessional space. From the outside the soft space draws attention to the architecture of the exhibition room but inside the curtain wall the exterior space disappears. The curtain walls, which give a temporary articulation of space, are removable and can disappear within minutes, with little or no trace.

Asdam's work has recently been presented in solo exhibitions at Gasser & Grunert, NYC (2001), The Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo, Norway (2001), Kunsthaus Glarus, Glarus, Switzerland (2001), and the Tate Britain, London (2000). Large installations were also featured at the Nordic Pavilion during the 1999 Venice Biennial and at the Norwegian Pavilion of the International Biennial in Melbourne, Australia (1999).

Opening Friday November 16, 6 - 8pm
