ALP / Peter Bergman is pleased to present Anna Bjerger’s first solo
exhibition at the gallery.
Bjerger’s imagery derives from out of date reference books, travel
journals and instruction manuals. Through the years she has been
collecting images to be able to return to this source at any time.
Clearly the material has lost its primary purpose but it is in these
faded pictures that our trivial history is to be found.
Through the process of painting these images they undergo a
transformation revealing new and surprising qualities and readings.
The new context is important to Bjerger as it releases the images
allowing a more intimate response. The painting is intuitive and
often one image relates to the next. Composition and motif is being
defined by openness and through the visible brush marks we become
aware of the immediacy of the paintings.
The paintings that are being shown here render the feeling of being
in direct contact with nature. The starting point is the four
elements, an obvious universal notion that is open to interpretation.
The images have an exploratory quality. Water feels wet and the fire
warm the physical elements in the painting are being reflected in the
motif.
‘Everything’ portrays what we already know, but don’t always see.
