Candida Hofer. Work Groups since 1968

The exhibition at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art will show photographs by Candida Höfer from several of her different work groups. Beginning with the Liverpool photos (1968), which were taken before Höfer studied with Bernd and Hilla Becher, the exhibition covers four decades of her creation and shows works from the series »Türken in Deutschland« (1973 and 1979), »Zoologische Gärten« (1990–2000), the slide projection »80 Pictures« (1996), as well as a selection of photographs taken since the 1980s of public interiors. The selection of works in terms of content is oriented on criteria such as perspective, color, light, and focus rather than being classified according to location or date.

On this basis, the selection presents an index of Höfers’s works that shifts to the center the relationship between subjective gaze and objective depiction. The beholder’s gaze structures representations of serial sequences, of banks and books. This »ordering gaze« follows both the function of the spaces as well as photographic image composition. In the arrangement, the real (that which is depicted), dissolves nearly completely and the spaces themselves appear as objects. The selection of different photographic formats is tied closely to the exhibition design selected for them. The curatorial design of the exhibition spaces is marked by a route through various spatial situations. Working out the exhibition spaces, as well as projection spaces, gallery space, and studio space makes it possible to create various conditions for perception and thematizes, at the same time, the connection between emergence and presentation of the photographic works. The exhibition was developed in cooperation with the working group »Ausstellungsdesign und kuratorische Praxis« at the HfG (Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe) under the leadership of Prof. Wilfried Kühn/Doreen Mende.

Diamonds and Bars
Die Kunst der Amischen. Quilts der Sammlung Schlumberger. (The Art of the Amish. Quilts from the Sammlung Schlumberger)
An exhibition at ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art

With a special contribution by Andrea Bowers: »The Weight of Relevance«
Opening Fr 11 January, 7 p.m. at ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art

The quilts of the Amish People living in the US come from the eras of Queen Victoria, the time of Jugendstil and Art Déco, which means, they were created between 1850 and 1940. The quilts, prepared exclusively by women in this strict, Christian religious community, are a diametrical contrast to the concurrent, European-influenced, American art and anticipate the design principles of the modern era far in advance. Abstract motifs and luminous color are varied, combined, and with their precise design patterns, present a deeply traditional branch of textile art. The »discovery« of the quilts took place, remarkably, in the 1960s, at the time of Minimal Art and Concrete Art. Over the past fifteen years, Maria Schlumberger has built up with stringency and passion, one of the world’s highest quality collections on the theme of the Amish quilts—inspired by her partner, Friedrich E. Rentschler’s distinguished contemporary collection FER. After the exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the ZKM | Karlsruhe is pleased to have the opportunity to present a selection of 70 pieces from this unique collection at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art.

Andrea Bowers: »The Weight of Relevance«
The »AIDS Memorial Quilt« is a quilt of enormous dimensions, which is prepared by thousands of people throughout the world to remember the lives of the countless people who have died from AIDS. In her video documentation, the American artist Andrea Bowers focuses on the people who exhibit the »AIDS Memorial Quilt« and supervise the storage room in which this cultural artifact is kept.

An extensive catalogue has been published for the exhibition »Diamonds and Bars« (ed. by Florian Hufnagl), Arnoldsche Verlaganstalt, Stuttgart 2007, available at the ZKM | for E8r 49.80.
