Comix. 28

Brandts Mediemuseet, Fotokunst, Kunsthallen, Odense

Many young artists currently find inspiration in the comic medium. This tendency is the focus of Kunsthallen Brandts in its exhibition COMIX. 28 artists are represented and their individual choices of media are as different as the polymorphous imagery of the comic. The artists present paintings, sculptures, installations, animated films, drawings and exiting hybrids. Kunsthallen Brandts is known for its courage in presenting its audience with exhibitions it would not have seen elsewhere. COMIX is no exception.

Art across all boundaries
Specific pieces literally transcend the traditional boundaries of Kunsthallen. The Artist HuskMitNavn, for instance, will be creating a 6-meter-long mural especially for the COMIX exhibition. The Rumanian artist Dan Perjovschi will draw small stick figures in the main stairway of the building and Søren Behncke, alias Papfar, will construct a 2-by-2-metre cardboard fight dust cloud in the foyer.

Fritz the Cat’s dad
The exhibition is inspired by Robert Crumb’s 60s comic Zap Comix. Crumb has since the 60s been among the pioneers of American underground- and adult comics, he is especially known as the creator of the characters Devil Girl and Fritz the Cat. A number of Robert Crumb’s ink drawings are featured at the COMIX exhibition.

Art experiences for the serious individual, the comic freak, kids, the film enthusiast …
Exhibition Curator Anna Krogh has successfully arranged an art exhibition offering experiences on various levels. The serious art appreciator, for instance, can look forward to enjoying paintings by Tal R, Martin Bigum, Annemarie Ploug and many additional international names. Comic freaks can look forward to cult comic artists like Robert Crumb, David B and Phoebe Gloeckner. See list with brief biographies of the exhibiting artists. Families with children will also find much excitement in a visit to Brandts. In addition to introducing the children to beautiful and colourful art, the exhibition features designated reading areas with a large selection of comics. If you are in to films, you will find experimenting animated work by, for instance, Nathalie Djurberg and Magnus Walin. In addition, Kunsthallen Brandts, in co-operation with neighbour Café Biografen, on September 22nd and 23rd, October 4th and 25th and November 8th, present animated films mainly by the Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki. Two-way inspiration

“At the moment we see an exiting crossover, in which comic creators are drawing inspiration from traditional art and in which traditional artists are inspired by comics. The exhibiting artists

Amano, Yoshitaka: Born in Japan in 1952. Lives and works in New York. Autodidact.
Yoshitaka Amano is both comic artist and traditional artist. He is especially known for his illustrations for the computer game Final Fantasy. He has worked in manga, made film animation and has received many awards for his work.

B, David: Born in France in 1959. Lives and works in Southern France. Trained at l’Ecole Supérieure de Arts Appliqués, Duperré, Paris. David B is a comic artist and is among other things known for the autobiographical comic book Epileptic (L'ascension du haut mal) which was published in Danish in 2007 by Carlsen.

Behncke, Søren, alias Papfar: Born in Denmark in 1967. Lives and works in Århus. Autodidact. Søren Behncke is a visual artist and works in such different areas as painting, sculpture, street art and happenings. He is especially known for his happenings using cardboard, for instance a saw located at the Little Mermaid statue and a cardboard slingshot for Boy at ARoS.

Bigum, Martin: Born in Denmark in 1966. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Autodidact. Martin Bigum is a visual artist working with painting, sculpture, video and text. He is a former comic line artist at Danish MAD magazine. As a painter he is especially known for the character Art form the series Radical Myth. He is represented at several larger Danish Museums.

Crumb, Robert: Born in USA in 1943. Lives and works in France. Autodidact. Robert Crumb is a comic artist, illustrator and visual artist. He is recognised as a pioneer of the American underground comic culture and is the most prominent of the genre. He is especially known for the comic book characters Devil Girl, Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. Crumb is furthermore behind the magazine Zap Comix, which the source of inspiration for the exhibition title at Kunsthallen Brandts.

Devantier, Kristian: Born in Denmark in 1971. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Trained at Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi. Kristian Devantier is a visual artist and works with painting, drawing, graphics and sculpture. He is represented in private collections and at museums both nationally and internationally and has received several awards.

Djurberg, Natalie: Born in Sweden in 1978. Lives and works in Berlin. Trained at Malmö Kunstakademi. Natalie Djurberg works with visual arts and animation. Her work is especially characterised by modelled animation. In 2006 she received the Becker Stipendium for her animations and in 2007 she received the stipendium of the Norwegian Carnegie Art Award.

Dalgaard, Jesper: Born in Denmark in 1974. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Trained at Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi and Det Fynske Kunstakademi. Jesper Dalgaard is a visual artist and works with sculpture, animation and drawning. He is represented at several museums and has received a number of prestigious awards and grants.

Dzama, Marcel: Born in Canada in 1974. Lives and works in New York. Trained at the University of Manitoba, Canada. Marcel Dzama is a visual artist and works with drawing, illustration, film and sculpture. Among other things, he is known for the book Drawings for Dante, 2003. Dzama is represented at Andy Warhol Foundation, New York Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, Florida and at MOMA, New York.

Ejner, Claus: Born in Denmark in 1967. Lives and works in Vejle. Trained at Det Jyske Kunstakademi. Claus Ejner is a visual artist and works with drawing, installation and comics. Among other things, he is known for the project Forsyningscentrakens Rapport 1 og 2 from 2006 and for his private publishing agency DADA-invest.

Essenhigh, Inka: Born in Germany in 1963. Lives and works in New York. Trained at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Inka Essenhigh is a visual artist and works with painting and drawing. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and museums internationally at, for instance, Berlin Biennalen and MOMA, New York.

Feuchtenberger, Anke: Born in Germany in 1960. Lives and works in Hamburg. Trained at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee. Anke Feuchtenberger is a visual artist and comic artist. She works with both drawing, painting, comics, posters and graphic design. Recently she has illustrated the cover for the German edition of Peter Høeg’s The Quiet Girl.

Gloeckner, Phoebe: Born in USA in 1960. Lives and works in Michigan. Trained as an illustrator. Phoebe Gloeckner had her breakthrough as a comic artist with A Child’s Life and Other Stories. Her work is semibiographical and combines prose and comic. She is a guest professor at the Michigan School of Art and Design.

Huizenka, Kevin: Boen in USA in 1977. Lives and works in Missouri. Autodidact comic artist. Kevin Huizenka is best known for his work in underground comic culture, among other things for his comics Curses and Ganges. His main work. Huizenga is represented at Uss Catastrophe – a website for alternative comics.

HuskMitNavn: Born in Denmark in 1975. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Autodidact. HuskMitNavn is a visual artist and works with street art, drawing, and graphic design. His characteristic expression is found both in public places, museums and galleries. HuskMitNavn has worked as an illustrator for different Danish magazines and for Politikken.

Killoffer: Born in France in 1966. Lives and works in Paris. Autodidact. Killoffer is known for his experimental comics. Together with, among others, David B he founded L’association, which has published a number of his books. In the wake of a comics course in 1981 he began to produce comics, and since then he has published Billet SVP, La Clef des Champs and 676 appatitions de Killoffer to mention a few.

Kvetny, Ida: Born in Denmark in 1980. Lives and works in London. Trained at Det Fynske Kunstakademi, at Yale and in London. Ida Kvetny is a visual artist and works with painting, sculpture and installation. She often mixes the three media in her work. Kvetny is among the youngest participating artists but has already received a large number of prestigious awards.

Land, Peter: Born in Denmark in 1966. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Trained at the Goldsmith College in London and Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi. He is a visual artist and works with video, drawing, painting, performance and sculpture. He is known for his ironic and humourous video pieces. Peter Land is represented at Statens Museum for Kunst, the Astrup Fearnly Museum in Oslo and at MOMA in New York.

Nielsen, Anders: Born in the USA in 1973. Lives and works in Chicago. Autodidact comic artist. Inspired by Tintin, X-Men, Raw- and Weirdo magazines, he began to make comics himself. Nielsen is especially known for a number of graphic novels; among these The Ballad of the Two-headed Boy.

Paper Rad: American artist collective consisting of three members: Jacob Ciocci (b.1977), Jessica Ciocci (b.1976) and Benjamin Jones (b.1977). Paper Rad makes music, installation, comics, animation, web design, digital art and performance art. Paper Rad has participated in a large number of exhibitions in USA and Europe either with art pieces or by performance.

Perjovschi, Dan: Born in Rumania in 1961. Lives and works in Bucharest. Trained as an illustrator. Since 1992 he has contributed with cartoons for the weekly magazine 22 in Bucharest. Besides his work for 22, Perjovschi works with decoration, in which he mixes drawing, comics and graffiti. He is represented at museums in both Europe and USA.

Ploug, Annemarie: Born in Denmark in 1966. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Trained at Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi. Annemarie Ploug is a visual artist and works with graffiti, painting, drawing and as an illustrator. She has received a number of grants and awards and is represented at Horsens Kunstmuseum and Skovgårdmuseet.

Raddum, Fredrik: Born in Norway in 1973. Lives and works in Oslo. Trained at Det Nasjonale Kunstakademi in Oslo. Frederik Raddum is a visual artist and works with sculpture, installation, photo and preformance art. He is known for his comic characters in the form of sculptures made from painted polyester. He is represented at ARoS and Statens Museum for Kunst.

Schmidt-Rasmussen, Christian: Born in Denmark in 1963. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Trained at Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi. Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen is a visual artist and works, among other things, with painting and animation. In 2005 he received Statens kunstfond’s three-year work stipendium.

Shrigley, David: Born in Scotland in 1968. Lives and works in Glasgow. Trained at the Glasgow School of Art. David Shrigley is a visual artist working with graphic design, comics, photography, sculpture and animation. Besides his artistic work, he has, among other things, animated a music video for the former music band Blur’s Good Song.

Strode, Thaddeus: Born in the USA in 1964. Lives and works in Los Angeles. Trained at the California Institute of the Arts. Thaddeus Strode is a visual artist and works with painting, drawing and objects. He experiences his first solo-exhibition in 1986 and has since then exhibited in both solo and group-exhibitions around the world.

R, Tal: Born in Israel in 1967. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Trained at Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi. Tal R is a visual artist and works with painting and sculpture. He received early recognition within and outside Denmark and is represented at, for instance, the Saatchi Gallery in London. Tal R has exhibited at such places as Louisiana, ARoS, Statens Museum for Kunst and Arken.

Wallin, Magnus: Born in Sweden in 1965. Lives and works in Malmö. Trained at Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi and Kunthögskolan Valand in Göteborg. Magnus Wallin is a visual artist and works with video art and animation. In 2006 he participated at the prestigious Scandinavian Carnegie Art Award exhibition.

Yokoland: Artist group established in Oslo in 2002. Consists of Aslak Gurholt Rønsen (b.1981), Espen Friberg (b.1981) and Thomas Tengesdal (b.1981). Yokoland, with is polymorphous profile and different projects, has placed itself in a gap between art, design, graphic design and a rather consultant-minded business. Yokoland has been featured at a number of solo and group-exhibitions.
