From the very beginning, Rühm has employed the use of various media in an effort to search new forms of artistic expression. While being emphatic on the Baroque/Expressionism/Dada language, he has exceeded, and thereby enhanced certain limits of poetry, as to performing arts (visual poetry, gestural and conceptual drawings, fotomontages, bookobjects) and to music (auditory poetry as speech- and audiotape-texts, chansons, documentary melodramas, vocal ensembles, conceptual piano pieces such as text/sound-transformations).
Gerhard Rühm has also significantly contributed to the “new radio play” (German Prize of Radio Plays of the War-Blind in 1983).
His interests tend to follow a cyclical pattern. It’s not surprising then that he again took up visual work which ranges from visual poetry to visual music and with gestural and automatic drawings, lifesize drawings of the body, fotomontages, collages, frottages, book-objects, silhouettes, ink etc. in between.
