In addition, there will be an opportunity to purchase drawings donated by some of the artists Wysing has worked with in the past, and those wishing to support the organisation at an important moment in its history.
“The fact that so many artists from all over the world want to support Wysing is a testimony to the efforts that have been made over the past two years in making the organisation artistically relevant in an international context. The centre may be located in rural Cambridgeshire but that hasn’t stopped it making in an impact beyond its geographical location, as well as closer to home”.
Manick Govinda, Head of Artists Services, Artsadmin and WAC Trustee.
Over the past year WAC has spent £1.7 million on creating some of the most beautiful studio spaces in the UK today. Sensitively designed by London based architects HawkinsBrown, the new block features studio spaces for nine artists alongside a state-of-the-art ‘new media’ suite and an education space that surpasses the needs of today’s schools and colleges. The nine new studio holders were selected by an international panel of critics and curators, with applications coming from Germany, France, and Italy as well as London and the UK. After four years hard work and extensive fundraising from public and private sources the building project re-launches with not only extensive new studio space for professional artists but a second building – a large new reception building with café facilities and an improved gallery and exhibition space acting as the new heart of the 11 acre Bourn site.
“We have brought to the area a building which provides a public statement about Wysing Arts Centre’s high ambitions and forward thinking attitude. Internally we have strived for uncluttered simplicity, generous proportions, maximum day-lighting and beautiful materials – in short an environment conducive to the artists’ creative process”. Jason Martin, associate, HawkinsBrown
