FIRST STORY - WOMEN BUILDING/NEW NARRATIVES FOR THE 21st CENTURY is a transdisciplinary project
including participation by women who work in various artistic and cultural fields. The project opens up new
dimensions of cultural production in terms of visibility of women's issues. The process of production becomes part
of the project itself. Workshops during the exhibition, a regular insert within MIL FOLHAS, the supplement of the
daily Portuguese newspaper Público and a symposium will force an exchange between the participants and those
who are interested in participating, involvement in the topics raised and a sharing of their experience and
knowledge.
FIRST STORY - WOMEN BUILDING/NEW NARRATIVES FOR THE 21st CENTURY takes on the function of a
Start-Up enterprise which develops further an international and local network of female artists, cultural producers,
film makers, architects, writers, activists etc. particularly in regard to their engagement in women related issues.
The commission of specific productions is based on various thematic topics and research fields. Points of
departure are new narratives by women oriented towards the future role of women in society. This does not
necessarily limit itself towards women issues only but crucial for this project is its concentration on "new
narratives".
FIRST STORY - WOMEN BUILDING/NEW NARRATIVES FOR THE 21st CENTURY in the production of its
spaces, in its structures and its contributions allows specific transformations of the role of women within societies
to be reflected in the established discourses within the cultural, social as well as in the scientific field. This project
takes into account the increasingly active participation of women. Porto 2001 brings with it the exceptional and
particular circumstances of a European Capital of Culture. This extraordinary opportunity allows FIRST STORY...
to create a situation in which a variety of cultural practices and research projects in the field of Cultural and Gender
Studies are introduced, which are as well based in Direct Action.
FIRST STORY - WOMEN BUILDING/NEW NARRATIVES FOR THE 21st CENTURY introduces a variety of topics
within the following categories. They can be seen in terms of specific parameters which shape the project's
character:
- WOMEN IN EDUCATION
analyzing tasks, access and perspectives for women in the educational field.
- WOMEN AT WORK
reflecting on the situation of women at work at a local as well as on an international level in order to develop new
possibilities of production, networking and exchange.
- WOMEN IN HISTORY
re-viewing history through the perspective of women narratives.
- WOMEN IN SOCIETY
focusing on the role of women in society and (everyday) culture, introducing a variety of women initiatives and
organizations.
- WOMEN IN CULTURE
linking international and local perspectives from different cultural and artistic disciplines such as Architecture, Fine
Arts, Media/Film, Cultural and Gender Studies with social and political initiatives as well as with individuals
engaged within the issues raised.
FIRST STORY in American is the name for ground floor. WOMEN BUILDING starts with its FIRST STORY as the
foundation on which other levels can be build on in the future.
WOMEN BUILDING
makes visible the active role of women constructing their own space and time.
NARRATIVES FOR THE 21st CENTURY
dedicates the first position to women to inscribe their historiography within this new century and into the new
millennium. In Portugal more than 27 years since the Revolution and since women obtained the right to vote, the
question is still, which narratives will be imagined and produced by women themselves.
This project initiates a space in which to
- research
- archive
- inform
- perform
- communicate
- circulate
- exchange women's issues.
FIRST STORY - WOMEN BUILDING/NEW NARRATIVES FOR THE 21st CENTURY has a multiple foundation
- as an exhibition and architectural space, located within the center of Porto, initiating a local structure, motivating
and strengthening the situation of women in Porto, and introducing a physical meeting point during Porto 2001 as
the European Capital of Culture.
- as a working space to communicate and to develop strategies, and as a space for events and performative action.
- as an insert on seven double pages to introduce various narratives outlined by FIRST STORY... in the supplement
MIL FOLHAS of the Portuguese daily newspaper Público.
- as printed matter to inform and to circulate the introduced topics. The short guide and the periodical case will be
released in Portuguese and English.
- as virtual structure and web architecture, located in the WWW, creating access, networking internationally and
facilitating connections between women situated in different fields and different parts of the world. www.firststory.net
will be continued after the exhibition closes.
