comunicato stampa

“We are sick and tired of being depicted in this way by outsiders... We have no intention of putting up with publications of this kind without voicing our protest... We will not accept being represented like this!” These harsh words were uttered in 1959 by the Lord Mayor of Essen on the publication of the book Im Ruhrgebiet with photographs by Chargesheimer and a text by Heinrich Böll. The indignation was deep-felt, and even today the open letter from Essen still reads like a bill of indictment.

Chargesheimer was a maverick whose thoughts broke the mould, a Bohemian during the period of reconstruction after the war, when people of his kind weren’t really liked. But his friends lauded his self-assurance, the courage of his convictions, his irony and his sarcasm when it came to critiquing post-War society.

This exhibition will present a broad, extensive picture of the “Life and Work” of this Cologne photographer and artist, showing many of the facets of Chargesheimer’s work and analysing it against the backdrop of the cultural history of the period after 1945. Apart from his large estate, which is in the keeping of Museum Ludwig, it has been possible to track down for this exhibition a large number of documents and photographs that had previously remained in total obscurity.
