Contemporary sculpture from Israel. In the exhibition 'Territorial Bodies Contemporary sculpture from Israel',
the human body serves as a central theme. It is a tool for examining thought
processes through visual language. A spectrum of emotions, thoughts and
memories come and pass through the body, attempting to touch its essence.
Sometimes the body itself is not present in the work of art, and all that is
present is a reference to it.
The exhibition presents a local occurrence through the contemporary works of
15 artists from Israel. The fifteen artists originate from various places in
Israeli society: Immigrants who spent part of their life in other countries
such as Romania and Russia, Israelis and Palestinian, inhabitants of cities
and small villages . With his own personal language, each artist uses body
images in order to pose various questions: social and political questions,
questions about the past, family and tradition and questions about the
borders of identity and self-definition and the power of love and death.
Galya Gur ZeevVideo and photographic works examine the concept of sculpture
and offer other ways of observing it. The juxtaposition of these different
artistic media presents a different aspect of the sculpture experience. The
artists create fantastic figures using modern materials such as latex,
computer printouts and plastic and polymeric castings. While the materials
are not the traditional sculpting materials, there is, nevertheless, a
connection with the history of sculpture and the history of art.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue, which will also include
articles that place the works in the broader artistic context, written by
two writers in different fields of contemporary art.
The article by Dr. Baruch Blich lecturer at art institutions, contemporary
art critic and researcher, views the works in the exhibition from a
theoretical perspective, with the goal of justifying the preoccupation with
the body in the artistic context: What is behind the manifestations of the
body in art, why do artists deal with the human body, over and over again,
distorting it, emasculating it and presenting it in various and sundry
contexts?
The second article is by Dr. Dahlia Manor historian, art critic. She is
Senior Lecturer at institutions of higher learning, primarily in the field
of contemporary Israeli art. Her article deals with the Israeli identity of
the art works, their connection to the history of sculpture, and the
relations with the art world in the international arena.
