Annika von Hausswolff

Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall, Stockholm

Contradictory feelings of unease and curiosity evoked by her macabre stories and glimpses of the unexpected in the everyday have been characteristic of von Hausswolff's work since the 1990's. In her photographs the human body is often physically present or tangible in the traces left behind: naked, abandoned bodies in picturesque landscapes, covered, lifeless bodies, children with chainsaws, or the reminders of human presence in the form of dust bunnies.

comunicato stampa

curated by David Neuman and Tessa Praun

This spring Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall has the great pleasure of showing a wide selection of work by Annika von Hausswolff, an artist whom Magasin 3 has followed for many years. This exhibition includes over 50 of von Hausswolff´s works, all from Magasin 3´s collection, as well as a large-scale installation specially created for the space.

Contradictory feelings of unease and curiosity evoked by her macabre stories and glimpses of the unexpected in the everyday have been characteristic of von Hausswolff´s work since the 1990´s. In her carefully composed photographs the human body is often physically present or tangible in the traces left behind: naked, abandoned bodies in picturesque landscapes, covered, lifeless bodies, children with chainsaws, or the reminders of human presence in the form of dust bunnies, empty chairs and discarded shirts. Using well-known motifs and art historical references Annika von Hausswolff´s work exists on the border between the documentary and the staged. In the last few years her world of images has increasingly taken physical shape in the exhibition space through the use of objects and props.

Annika von Hausswolff was born in 1967 and lives and works in Gothenburg. Since the 1990´s she has had many solo exhibitions and been included in group shows at institutions such as the Musée d´Art Moderne de Ville de Paris, the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg, ARKEN Museum for Moderne Kunst in Copenhagen, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and Fotomuseum in Winterthur. For the 1999 Venice Biennale Annika von Hausswolff represented Sweden at the Nordic Pavilion. Her work has previously been shown at Magasin 3 as part of the group exhibitions ``Annika von Hausswolff, Jane & Louise Wilson, Weegee´´ (2000), ``Extension´´ (2002) and most recently in ``Works from the Collection of Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall´´ (2005).

Artist's book: Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall will be publishing an artist´s book, ICH BIN DIE ECKE ALLER RÄUME, in collaboration with Annika von Hausswolff this April. The publication will include over 70 new photographs - the artist´s documentation of the exhibition process, close-ups and different angles that provide a new perspective on her work. ICH BIN DIE ECKE ALLER RÄUME will also include a catalogue raisonné section of the complete oeuvre of Annika von Hausswolff, over 150 works.

Program
Lectures and tours will be held in Swedish unless otherwise stated.

Thursday, February 14 at 7pm, lecture A look at the past. About older photographic technology and its users, 1839-1980 Lecture by Leif Wigh (former curator at Moderna Museet) in conjunction with the exhibition Miroslav Tichy & Julia Margaret Cameron, which is on view until March 23.

Sunday, February 17 at 2pm, special tour David Neuman, director of Magasin 3, gives a tour of the Annika von Hausswolff exhibition "Ich bin die Ecke aller Räume".

Thursday, February 28 at 7pm, lecture von Hausswolff's Technologies: a Foucauldian reading Cecilia Sjöholm, lecturer at Södertörns Högskola.

Michel Foucault was interested in the power he linked to 'technologies of the self' and aimed to formulate the self as a moral driving force outside of the system with which the individual is coded, socially and politically. Can one analyse Annika von Hausswolff's images under this lense? Which conflicts are evident in her work? The lecture looks at von Hausswolff's images using the notions of Foucault.

Open tours, Saturdays at 2 pm Every Saturday we offer a guided tour of the exhibitions, ca 45 min. NB: This Saturday, February 9, only Tichy & Cameron will be included in the tour.
