This wide-ranging group of California sculptors deals with internal and external structures, referencing the body and organic forms in their work.
Linda Parnell is a sculptor and painter working with the juxtaposition of industrial and decorative materials. She investigates the enchantment of science and the materialization of the mythos.
Alison J. Petty works with porcelain clay, glass, and rubber, exploring sculptural objects that relate to the organic systems of the body and natural world. Referencing cross-section anatomy, Petty explores how skin functions both to hold the inner body in place, as well as its wondrous malleability to stretch from the internal outward.
Human nature, which combines abstract thinking and instinct, play together in the work of Gordon Senior. The hare is a metaphor for the artist, and people in general, toiling up steep slopes, working with unrecognizable tools, suggesting tasks yet to be completed.
Dean DeCocker explores an interest in formal elements by transforming flat, two-dimensional surfaces into three-dimensional objects. DeCocker derives inspiration from everyday objects such as mailboxes, aircraft structures, wings and propellers, heavy machinery and architectural works.
Phillip Smith experiments with the fluidity, growth, and general transformation of simple geometry into complex sculptural structures. Using stacks of precisely constructed forms, Smith use's scale and geometry to manipulate static shapes into graceful flowing forms.
