The ICA is proud to present a major exhibition devoted to
contemporary art, design and architecture from France.
Bringing together graphic design, architecture, and visual art,
this show will feature the acclaimed work of Pierre Huyghe,
M/M, Philippe Parreno, and R&Sie...François Roche/Stephanie
Lavaux.
More than four single shows, and more than a collaboration,
this exhibition will illuminate the way each artist works and
reveal their experimental working methods, alongside new
projects under development.
At the Venice Biennale (2001) Huyghe showed a lamp
prototype in the French Pavilion that was designed with
Parreno and M/M. In the ICA’s lower gallery the lamp, with its
sprawl of lights, rises from a central seating cluster up to the
ceiling and is shown with a series of posters and robotic light
boxes made by M/M. M/M, a graphic design partnership
between Michael Amzalag and Mathias Augustyniak, also
present their work on Björk’s video Hidden Place from the
album Vespertine.
In the adjoining rooms vast video projections of urban terrain
are presented - featuring examples of public housing
architecture - by Huyghe (Les Grands Ensembles, 2001) and
Parreno (Credits, 1999).
Recently, Parreno and Huyghe acquired the rights to use a
Manga character, a little girl called Ann Lee. The very first
version of an Ann Lee film will be screened together with 6pm,
a specially created silhouetted carpet and the generic Ann Lee
poster by M/M, No Ghost Just A Shell.
The architecture of R&Sie...François Roche/Stephanie Lavaux
is inseparable from the environment, seeking a form of dialogue
with it that is organic. François Roche will show a video
projection of the morphing processes used in his architectural
projects as well as a hanging carrousel of prints documenting
his work of the last ten years. The exhibition will be touring to
Cube, Manchester during 2002.
