Dealing the perceptions are local artists Miguel Chew and Haslinda A R., Translating Perception pokes at how different perceptions can be to that – of an audience, and of an artist.

At this global stage of communications, are we really hearing what the others are saying or are we simply lost in translation? Using silhouette images, Miguel extracts information of perception into a process; with the use of lighting, he brings in a narrative sensory to his works. Haslinda A R, on the other hand, sees surface as a process – a layering of communications. By using identical monochromatic value, she creates a subtle shift in texture, depth and tone, and the choice of material finishes creates a changing perception.

Miguel and Haslinda are both actively involved in the contemporary art scene and have been presented and exhibited in renowned galleries and museums in Singapore and around the region.

Miguel has exhibited with Singapore Tyler Print Institute Gallery, Art Seasons and Plastique Kinetic Worms, to name a few. He has also exhibited internationally in the Philippines, Ireland and Thailand. Miguel was awarded Juror’s Choice in 2005 Philip Morris Singapore Art Awards. His artwork is widely seen in public, having been commissioned by the Majestic Hotel, Esplanade and Kranji Turf Club. His artworks are collected by corporations and individuals locally and overseas.

Haslinda has exhibited widely in local group exhibitions and some notable exhibitions include New Contemporaries: New Art from LASALLE-SIA (part of the Singapore Art Show 2005) and the Singapore Art Exhibition (part of the Singapore Art Show 2007). She was awarded the Emerging Artist Grant from the National Arts Council for her first solo exhibition held at Plastique Kinetic Worms in 2006.

Translating Perception is supported by the Alliance Française de Singapour, runs from the 20th of February to 6th March 2008 at the SG Private Banking Gallery, Alliance Française de Singapour.
