160 exhibitors from 21 countries featuring new art by living artists
The art world is gearing up for the tenth edition of The Armory Show, the International Fair of New Art, March 27-30, 2008, at Pier 94 in New York City. Visitors to The Armory Show will encounter new art by over 2,000 living artists from 160 of the world’s leading galleries and nonprofit organizations. Exhibitors will be coming from 39 different cities in 21 countries.
Continuing its commitment to cutting edge art, The Armory Show welcomes fifteen new galleries to the fair this year, including Juliette Jongma from Amsterdam, Nogueras Blanchard from Barcelona and i8 from Reykjavik. Several exhibitors will be presenting works by artists in the concurrent Whitney Biennial, among them Canada, which is showing a one-person installation by Joe Bradley, David Kordansky Gallery, which is devoting its booth to William E. Jones, and Susanne Vielmetter, who is featuring five Biennial artists: Edgar Arceneaux, Jed Caesar, Alice Koenitz, Rodney McMillian and Ruben Ochoa.
The Armory Show’s tenth edition promises to be another record-breaking event: attendance in 2007 rose to 52,000 visitors, an increase from 47,000 in 2006, and total sales exceeded $85 million, rising from $62 million the previous year. According to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, “Since its introduction in 1999, The Armory Show has quickly become one of the world’s leading art marketplaces, helping to fuel our City’s economy while enhancing our status as a top cultural destination.” The Armory Show’s Executive Director Katelijne De Backer adds, “In ten years The Armory Show has become an international institution. Due to our exclusive focus on contemporary art, artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from all over the world make New York their destination during Armory Week.”
The Armory Show is held annually in New York City, home to more galleries, artists, collectors and critics than any other city in the world. Among the innumerable shows during the fair, visitors to the city will also have the opportunity to visit the 2008 Whitney Biennial and to get a last-minute look of the New Museum’s inaugural exhibition, which has been extended to coincide with the fair. This year also marks the introduction of The Armory Show’s sister fair, VOLTA NY, a curated fair featuring only solo projects.
A selection committee of prominent gallerists vetted over 600 applicants to create an exhibition that encompasses the richness and diversity of the international art world at its most current. The Armory Show aims to provide a global perspective of the art world to present the best new art by living artists.

The Armory Show, The International Fair of New Art, was started by four New York art dealers as The Gramercy International Contemporary Art Fair in 1994 and takes its name from the rich history of the 1913 Armory Show, which introduced European Modernism to America. In July 2007 it became part of Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc.
