The Artist's Library

Centre international d'art et du paysage, Ile de Vassiviere

The Artist's Library acts as a "Library of Babel" born in the visionary mind of the great Argentinean writer J. L. Borges. Artists and spectators become its librarians - arcane individuals seeking the ultimate book, revelation, or Truth. Each of the works integrates the book as a 'readymade' or found object. Some maintain the book's status as book, offering a framework in which to read the selected volumes. Others transform them, physically or conceptually, into works of art - to contemplate but no longer touch. Artists: Carol Bove, Claire Fontaine, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Thomas Hirschhorn, Joseph Kosuth, Maria Pask, Martha Rosler..

In the context of the very particular architecture of the Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière exemplified in Aldo Rossi’s archetypal exhibition spaces (the ‘nave’, the ‘reading room’ and the ‘tower’…), The Artist’s Library acts as a ‘Library of Babel’ born in the visionary mind of the great Argentinean writer J. L. Borges. Artists and spectators become its librarians – arcane individuals seeking the ultimate book, revelation, or Truth.

The artists Carol Bove, Claire Fontaine, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Thomas Hirschhorn, Joseph Kosuth, Maria Pask, Martha Rosler Library publications and Peter Wüthrich but also Nina Katchadourian in the Café de l'île, invite the viewer to enter their respective worlds using books as fuel for their creativity.

Rules of the game: each of the works integrates the book as a ‘readymade’ or found object. Some maintain the book’s status as book, offering a framework in which to read the selected volumes. Others transform them, physically or conceptually, into works of art – to contemplate but no longer touch. These works may only suggest, by a cover, title, or citation, the meaning inside. Books become tools, building blocks, weapons, databases... Titles from the history of art enter into dialog with works of literature, philosophy, political theory, religion, social and cultural history, etc.

Each of the works in the exhibition can be seen as a very personal form of the artist’s library, a physical manifestation of some of the ideas that are fundamental to his or her work, a sort of intellectual and cultural self-portrait.

We are what we read.

The exhibition The Artist’s Library is produced in partnership with Naturalia, Pro Natura and the Syndicat mixte régional et interdépartemental de Vassivière en Limousin (SYMIVA).

Lecture and shamanic ritual with shaman Fernand Mich in Maria Pask’s Beautiful City
23 February 2008 at 4 pm
In the atelier of the Art Center, Maria Pask creates an environment where the public can consult and exchange views on a library of publications concerning religion, ethics and spirituality. A wide selection of beliefs and philosophies are presented side by side, without judgment of any sort - this demonstrates, in itself, a form of enlightenment.

Within Beautiful City, speakers of diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds will consider the question of how to build a beautiful city, a city built not of walls and towers, but of visionary ideas, ethics and mutual trust. The city is used as a metaphor for the construction of a new beginning, new ideas and new connections.
The talks will be scheduled on a monthly basis, beginning with an intervention by shaman Fernand Mich on February 23 at 4 pm, coinciding with the opening of the exhibition. After that, other conferences will take place one a month, during the term of the exhibition, according to the announce schedule.

Fernand Mich is born in Luxembourg in 1947. As a teenager he meets the lapp reindeer breeder Mikel Utsi and discovers the shamanic way. He then studied ethnology and oriental tongues (especially Kurdish and Persian) and spend two years in Turkish and Iranian Kurdistan, where he studies the Kurdish oral tradition, collecting tales and traditional music. The encounter, at the age of 40, with the Hungarian shaman and artist Joska Soos is a tremendous watershed in his life. Several stays in southern Siberia (Tuva and Kalassia) gave him the opportunity to practice and deepen his knowledge with local shamans.
Living for twenty years in Amsterdam, Fernand Mich conducts sessions both in the Netherlands and France.

Hans-Walter Müller's inflatable modules
All year long the Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière's Education program team welcomes both school groups and visitors inside Hans-Walter Müller's inflatable modules. The idea is to create a new type of equipment that serves altogether as an architectural work and as a mobile educational tool to be transported, installed and used as a playful space of wondering and as a meeting spot, in relationship with the notion of "pavilion-garden". At the core of the project is the conception of an air made architecture, light, nomadic - mainly designed for educational purposes - with an easy and fun installation process of the module itself on a platform also design with usability and environmental concerns in mind. In the sculpture park, Hans-Walter Müller's 3 modules are offering unique architectural perspectives relating to various settings: the forest, the lake, and Aldo Rossi's architecture.
