Fake but Accurate. At first glance Zwakman appears to work in the tradition of documentary photography with images of new suburbs, major traffic arteries, back gardens and Dutch panoramas. On closer inspection his photographs appear to be made of scale models, which he has reconstructed as contemporary monuments in his studio.
In the spring of 2008 Huis Marseille will present a retrospective by the well-known Dutch photographer Edwin Zwakman, in which his three latest series can be seen together for the first time.
At first glance Zwakman appears to work in the tradition of documentary photography with images of new suburbs, major traffic arteries, back gardens and Dutch panoramas all taken from conventional photographic viewpoints. His images are familiar yet never precisely indentifiable. On closer inspection his photographs appear to be made of scale models, which he has reconstructed as contemporary monuments in his studio.
