Yvon Lambert, Paris is pleased to announce its first exhibition of works by the
German photographer Candida Höfer. Entitled « Paris Serie », the exhibition will
present large scale indoor pictures of well known monuments such as the Sorbonne
library, the Théâtre de Marie Antoinette in Versailles, the Salle de Chasse in
Fontainebleau, the Salle Pleyel concert hall in Paris.
Candida Höfer lives and work in Cologne. After finishing her training at the Schmölz-
Huth Studio, she became a pupil of Bernd Becher in 1976. From 1997 to 2000 she
taught as professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Karlsruhe.
Along with Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Axel Hütte and Thomas Ruff, Candida
Höfer belongs to the objectivist paradigm movement, also called the School of
Düsseldorf. She’s first been inspired by the conceptual genius of the Bechers ; their
objectivist, neutral and methodic practice aimed at a precise confrontation with
German reality.
Far from repeating this model, Höfer has managed to renew its potential. Her work is
not about archiving, but more about elaborating a scrupulous typology. “Paris Serie”
invites the viewer into cultural and historical places, in Paris and its surrounds
(Fontainebleau and Versailles).
There is a tension in Höfer’s work between a seeming neutrality, a gigantic format
and the uncanny ambiguity of the deserted places pictured by the artist. The
sumptuous architecture of the interiors is magnified by a rigorous composition,
natural light, infinite detail, and a distant vanishing point. Through the imposing
format, these photographs throw the viewer deep into the perspective, bringing to life
the traditional notion of “a picture as a window” and give an exhilarating impression of
privileged solitude in these usually crowded places.
