comunicato stampa

Direct from the 49th Biennale of Venice, Lyndal Jones' multi-screen video installation Deep Water/Aqua Profunda opens for the first time outside of Venice at the Museum of Contemporary Art on December 5, 2001.

One of Australia¹s foremost multidisciplinary artists, Lyndal Jones was chosen by the Australia Council as the sole Australian exhibitor at the 2001Biennale of Venice.

Jones¹ work Deep Water/Aqua Profunda was created specifically for the Australian pavilion at the Biennale and will form the basis of her exhibition at the MCA. This exhibition will be complimented by a number of earlier works by Jones including The Prediction Pieces (1981-1991) drawn from the MCA¹s Contemporary Art Archive, and From the Darwin Translations: Spitfire 1 2 3 (1996).

Based on footage shot in Venice and on Sydney Harbour, the five large video projections of Deep Water/Aqua Profunda blend a collage of voices in English and Italian with layers of sound and images, drawing parallels between Venetian canals and the activity of Sydney¹s Circular Quay. The work depicts a meshing of languages and cultures, and examines the watery images that link Venice and Sydney, two cities dependant on ferries and vaporetti.

Following the MCA show Deep Water/Aqua Profunda will open at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia on 7 February 2002.

The MCA has a number of unique contemporary art collections. At present there are no dedicated permanent collection galleries within the Circular Quay site; curated exhibitions drawing from the Collections are regularly integrated into the MCA's changing exhibition program.

Located at Circular Quay west, on the harbour foreshore of Sydney's business district at the entrance to the historic Rocks precinct, the MCA is close to all forms of public transpost: bus, train and ferry.
The museum entrace is via Circular Quay and disability access is via George Street, The Rocks.
