Spleen
Fear is like a bow which becomes tight at the knot.

Galería Pepe Cobo is pleased to present MP & MP Rosado’s (San Fernando, Cádiz, 1971) recent work, Spleen, where we will be able to see their latest sculptures and drawings from the 27th of March 2008.
The word Spleen comes from the greek splen. In English it stands for the organ known by the same name; in French, Spleen represents the state of pensive sadness or melancholy. The connection between the spleen and melancholy can be found in the greek theory of humours, one of which was the black bile segregated by the spleen and associated to a melancholic personality.
In this exhibition MP & MP Rosado present a series of sculptures that look like blackened or charred remains of trees, produced in terracotta, which incorporate here a book, there a pair of trainers, or a dismembered chair; that is, all shorts of melancholic detritus of the kind one finds in a boxroom or bin. These “tree remains”, distorted and contorted, are bound to the remains and bound together in sort of embrace, though it is this forced embrace in which they suffocate. The work of MP & MP Rosado in inextricable linked to the duality manifested in this embrace, because, as Robert Burton writes “Melancholy is a inherent characteristic of mortal creatures”; and not even twins are free from it, though they can nevertheless, from where they stand, investigate with a fresh and qualitatively different perspective the relation which exists between melancholy and the concepts of interiority, individuality and, consequently, identity.
On the other side, we can see drawings which, parting from photographs of insipid settings which the artists cut and redistribute, generate pictorial trompe “l’oeils” of an apparently “natural” space to which a layer of more spectacular fiction is added in the end, covering the previous and subtler layers of fiction with a far more spectacular abnormality and evidencing this way that the relations between artifice, normality, and spectacle are not at all what we assume they are.
MP & MP Rosado have been awarded in 2008 the Comunidad de Madrid ARCO prize for Young artists, and their work can be found amongst art collections as prestigious as the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, Seville, Spain; the Colección Bergé, Madrid, Spain; the Colección Caja Madrid; the Colección MP, Sevilla, Spain; DA2, Salamanca, Spain; Deutsche Bank, London, UK; Ellipse Foundation, Portugal; Fundación Coca-Cola, Madrid, Spain; MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, León, Spain; Museo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid, Spain; the Colección la Caixa, Barcelona, Spain; and the Colección Unión Fenosa.
