La galleria Tiziana Di Caro ha il piacere di iniziare la sua programmazione con la prima mostra personale in Europa di Susie J. Lee, intitolata Bodies of Water, che inaugurerà sabato 12 aprile 2008 alle ore 19.00.

La mostra comprende una serie di video ed installazioni, alcune delle quali eseguite nel 2007, altre realizzate in esclusiva durante il suo soggiorno a Salerno. Il comune denominatore delle opere è l'acqua, non solo in quanto elemento di sostentamento della vita biologica, e spirituale, ma anche come simbolo metaforico. L'acqua caratterizza in maniera determinante i luoghi in cui si trova, ed è evidente che il progetto Bodies of Water deriva dalla vicinanza e dalla particolare intimità che Salerno ha con il mare, ed è il risultato, non solo dell'osservazione, ma anche di un'interpretazione metaforica delle ragioni effimere dell'acqua, di questo elemento che “ non ha forma, ma occupa uno spazio, ha un volume, ma non può essere trattenuta, è priva di colore, ma non è invisibile. Semplicemente manifesta la sua presenza alterando ciò che tocca”.

Susie J. Lee ne analizza la natura metaforica, dando vita a lavori, in cui l'aspetto etereo dell'immagine video e del suono si mescolano e interagiscono con quello materico e fisico dell'acqua, così proiezioni video, ovvero illusioni che si configurano come oggetti digitali tridimensionali, si intersecano con elementi scultorei di sapore minimale. Lo spettatore si confronterà con l'aspetto effimero della pioggia (Rain Shower), potrà riconoscere i propri stati d'animo “interpretati” dai diversi stati dell'acqua (Towards Entropy), potrà riconoscere la natura temporale ed inalterabile dei desideri (Wishes Change; Wishing Changes You)

La sua pratica artistica è sempre stata caratterizzata da una meticolosa sperimentazione, durante la quale l'artista testa diversi medium: dal video al suono, dalla carta al legno, dalla plastica all'acqua, come nel caso delle opere in mostra.

Il linguaggio artistico, così come i soggetti delle sue opere, derivano da una formazione accademica eterogenea, che coniuga l'interesse per la scienza e la biologia, e l'attitudine verso i linguaggi espressivi dell'arte. Una sensibilità tattile va ricollegata al background di ceramista: l'artista ha, infatti, conseguito il diploma all'University of Washington Ceramics Program. Così come l'interesse per la scienza ha radici nei suoi studi universitari, Lee ha conseguito una laurea in biofisica e biochimica molecolare all'università di Yale.
La tensione verso il linguaggio formale dell'arte ha fatto sì che conciliasse i suoi interessi, fino ad analizzare, attraverso il linguaggio artistico, i confini tra il movente estetico dell'immagine, e la sua sostanza e caratteristica fisica.

SUSIE JUNGUNE LEE è nata ad Hershey, Pennsylvania da emigrati coreani, ed è cresciuta a Grand Forks, nel North Dakota. Si è laureata in Scienza Molecolare, Biofisica e Biochimica all'Università di Yale, per poi
frequentare un master in Educazione alla Columbia University. Ha ricevuto il suo diploma all'Università di Washington. Attualmente vive e lavora a Seattle.
Ha esposto il suo lavoro: a Seattle presso Lawrimore Project, e presso Henry Art Gallery, a Portland, Spokane, Miami, si recente all' Hyundai Gallery in Seoul Korea. Ha ricevuto numerosi premi e riconoscimenti, e numerose sono le sue opere presenti in collezioni pubbliche e parivate a London, New York ed a Seattle, dove è presente al Boise Art Museum, Colby College Museum of Art and promised gifts to Montclair Museum and the Denver Art Museum.
Nel 2006 è stata nominata “best emerging artist” dal Seattle Weekly

Galleria Tiziana Di Caro is pleased to open its programming with Susie J. Lee’s first European solo exhibition, Bodies of Water, on Saturday 12th April 2008 - 7 p.m.

The exhibition includes a series of videos and installations, some of which were created in 2007, and some of which were exclusively realized during her stay in Salerno. Water is the fil rouge of these works, not only as an element for the sustenance of biological and spiritual life, but also as a metaphorical symbol. Water defines place in a fundamental way, and the project Bodies of Water comes from the proximity and particular intimacy that Salerno has with the sea. The project is both a result of observations and interpretations of water's undefined qualities as an element that is understood as such: “It has no form, yet it occupies space; thought it has volume; it cannot be held; it is colorless, but not invisible. It simply makes its presence known by altering the things it touches.”

Susie J. Lee examines this metaphorical nature, giving life to works in which the ethereal aspects of video image and sound interact with the materiality of water. Thus, video projections, i.e. illusions which are configured as three-dimensional digital objects, intersect with sculptural elements in a minimal style. The spectator will face the ephemeral aspect of rain (Rain Shower), identify his / her states of mind “interpreted” by different states of water (Towards Entropy), and will recognize the temporal and ever-changing nature of wishing (Wishes Change; Wishing Changes You).

Her artistic expressions and themes derive from a heterogeneous academic training, connecting her background in biological sciences with an affinity for the communicative languages of art. Her understanding of science is rooted in her university studies where she received a degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale University. Indeed, Susie J Lee’s artistic praxis has always been characterized by a careful methodology of experimentation and analysis, in which the artist tests different media—from video and sound, or paper and wood, to glass and water, as in the case of the works featured. The tactile sensitivity of the work can be linked to her background as a ceramicist; the artist received her Masters in the ceramics department at the University of Washington. The inclination towards the formal language of art has created a link between her interests to the extent that she explores, through artistic mediums, the border between the aesthetic motives of the image and its physical characteristics.

SUSIE JUNGUNE LEE was born to Korean immigrants in Hershey, Pennsylvania and grew up in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She was awarded a Bachelors of Science in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University and a Masters in Education at Columbia University. She received her MFA at the University of Washington. Currently, she is a resident of Seattle.
Her work has been exhibited in Seattle venues such as Lawrimore Project and the Henry Art Gallery, as well as in Portland, Spokane, Miami, and recently at the Hyundai Gallery in Seoul Korea. he has received a number of awards and grants, and her work has been placed in both public and private collections from London, New York, and Seattle to the Boise Art Museum, Colby College Museum of Art and promised gifts to Montclair Museum and the Denver Art Museum.
