Transcendence in Contemporary Art. The Inward Eye explores individual works of art that transport the viewer from the here and now into a distinctly different and more timeless realm and will feature paintings, sculpture, and drawings that address the viewer on such a profound and preverbal level that we discover that we know them before we can name them.
Transcendence in Contemporary Art
The Inward Eye explores individual works of art that transport the viewer from the here and now into a distinctly different and more timeless realm and
will feature paintings, sculpture, and drawings that address the viewer on such a profound and preverbal level that we discover that we know them
before we can name them.
The exhibition features twenty-nine works created between 1970 and 2001 that capture the viewer's attention in a variety of ways.
From perceptual
work like that of Charles Ray or James Turrell that allows us to see ourselves seeing, to tactile work by Ernesto Neto or Ann Hamilton that engages all
of our sensory faculties.
It also includes work by Howard Hodgkin and Donald Moffett that unleash the power of abstraction and color, as well as
metaphorical work by Robert Gober and Wolfgang Liab that set a stage and then call upon the viewer to complete a narrative.
Conceived as a kind of
contemporary cabinet of wonders, the audience will have the opportunity to encounter these diverse works individually and discover the range of ways
in which contemporary art can bring us into closer contact with life's intangibles, inspiring reverie and summoning what French novelist Marcel Proust
called our "involuntary memory."
Artists included in the exhibition are: Helen Altman, James Lee Byars, Vija Clemins, Lynn Davis, Katharina Fritsch, Robert Gober, Felix
Gonzalez-Torres, Rodney Graham, Ann Hamilton, Howard Hodgkin, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Anish Kapoor, Wolfgang Liab, Walter De Maria,
Donald Moffett, Ernesto Neto, Raymond Pettibon, Rachel Ranta, Charles Ray, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley, Thomas Ruff, Qiu Shi-Hua, Pat Steir,
Nestor Topchy, James Turrell, Bill Viola, and Robert Wilson.
