Following its presentation in the Haus der Kunst, in the Istanbul Museum of Modern
Art and in the Sharjah Contemporary Arab Art Museum in the United Arab Emirates, the
Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi is the next station for the exhibition, "Andreas
Gursky." The artist's large format photographs will be on view there from April 19
to May 25, 2008. Both the exhibition and its international tour have been organized
by the Haus der Kunst.
"The Haus der Kunst and Andreas Gursky are interested in exhibition locations that
are situated in the new international growth centers and that exchange more and more
with western cultures," claims Chris Dercon, director of Haus der Kunst. "Gursky's
works reflect phenomena of a globalized world and are met with particular interest
in the United Arab Emirates. With this exhibition tour the Haus der Kunst is
promoting intercultural dialogue at the same time as Munich is experiencing a growth
in Arab-speaking visitors."
The exhibition space in the Emirates Palace is designed by Herzog & de Meuron.
In the interior of the pavilion, which will house the exhibition, the Swiss
architects will erect a space that encompasses a 550-square meter exhibition area.
The steel construction is temporary and reusable. A white cloth, back-lit membrane
covers the exterior of the pavilion, which thus appears to be hidden under a tent;
the cultural dialogue continues with this presentation's design in Abu Dhabi.
When speaking about the exhibition and its tour, Andreas Gursky says: "Abu Dhabi,
Dubai, Bahrain and Kuwait are places that have recently inspired me to create a
particular kind of image. The exhibition provides me with a unique opportunity to
bring some of these impressions with enthusiasm back to their place of origin."
The project takes place under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan and
was made possible by Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo, founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts
Foundation; it is further supported by the Goethe-Institut.
