Using the band-aid as both inspiration and material, artist has purchased hundreds to make his sculptures and performance based works of art. Combining their readymade adhesive quality of bandages with their association with healing, the artist transforms this household product into uncommon works of art.
all my little failures is a new body of artwork by Canadian artist
Andrew McPhail. Using the common band-aid as inspiration and a readily
available material, the artist has stuck approximately 10,000 band-aids
together to make a sculpture that is equal parts memorial quilt and
performance piece. Appropriating the universal association of band-aids
with both hurt and healing, the artist transforms this and other
domestic products into unexpected works of art that suggest a
correlation between the way that we tend to prejudicially moralize both
homophobia and illness.
Andrew McPhail completed both his BFA and MFA at York University. His
work has been exhibited at the Robert Birch Gallery, Toronto; Glenhyrst
Art Gallery, Brantford; Transit Gallery, Hamilton and the New Gallery,
Calgary. He is represented by Birch-Libralato Gallery, Toronto and
Transit Gallery, Hamilton. Andrew McPhail lives in Hamilton, Ontario.
